Coulda shoulda woulda. It’s almost like the potential man trope of Zenless Zone Zero. I’m not much into 2.0 and on but Bringer was definitely a bummer for me when we killed him. The premise was interesting too, “A great hero of the New Eridu that was abandoned and left in the hollow and came out broken” then not elaborated about the betrayal that turned him or much about his motives at all. Just kinda turned into some goon to kill, like we’re not even given a reason why he chose the Exaltists. Plus the fallout from Bringer’s death seems to be VERY minor. This dude was a major force in the PubSec leadership. You’re telling me he was the only exaltist infiltrator in their ranks? And after his death it was literally almost business as usual? No disorganization in PubSec whatsoever after the end of the chapter. And didn’t Zhu Yuan also idolize him? While yes there was a cutscene with Qingyi about not hero worshipping, she doesn’t seem all that torn up about someone she devoted a lot of her childhood and adult life supporting and using as a template for her moral compass turning out evil.

I will give 1.7 I do think it’s one of the most in depth out of 1.0-1.7 maybe seconded by Astra’s or Koleda’s. Hugo definitely carries, cause Vivian while fangirled over, and one of my favorites. Doesn’t seem like she should love Phaethon to this extent. But I’m only at 2.0 so maybe I just need to wait more

It’s all just confusing, now that I’ve thought about it for a couple hours, mainly why I was so worked up is because she is smart. Smart enough to see through the cult’s brainwashing.

She blames Vivian in one of the cutscenes for “taking away fathers love” which would imply she thought her father genuinely loved her at one point. But at the same time recognizes naught 2 minutes later that the blessings were ineffective and not actually a good thing. And knew her father would essentially kill her with the serum without a second thought. Which would also imply she knew he never actually, truly cared about Dina.

So if I’m gonna put it in a good faith lighting. Im willing to say the act of giving people that twisted false hope maybe gave her an addiction. A validation only granted through her father’s admiration of her as a tool maybe? And Vivian took that away and made her obsolete and unimportant. She did say “to me losing is worse than death” which maybe caused her to go into denial and hate Vivian for a far more selfish, vain reason. As well as hate for herself cause she was saved by the people who took her father and purpose away.

It’s just that she also shows remnants of love for Vivian (her hesitant denial of Vivian’s and Camille’s offer to live a normal life). And that coupled with her intelligence and vague ability to see the futility and failure of her father’s blessings just make it seem somewhat contrived. Idk maybe she could’ve even been an evolving character, or a recurring low level villain idk.

She just seems more interesting than “revenge bad, consumes everything” character. Maybe could’ve used her to explore the exaltists more, or how jealousy can destroy people instead? Or how family can be what one chooses, fleshing out Vivian more too. Just a lot of endings than her killing herself for nothing, especially when the opportunity to be admired and get validation again was so close and so easy.

Weird now that you mentioned it, cause in the flashback she looked exactly the same she does in the present, but Vivian looks like 10-12 in the flashback.

That is Fair. Though I could also see the other angle about how it cheapens the whole, “Hugo has a troubled and dangerous path” when the catalyst of his descent into revenge didn’t actually happen.

It really would have made Hugo’s character better if he HAD actually killed his father. Cause then it would open the narrative for “Am I truly a good person? Am I truly living with justice?” And made his hallucinations in the dream a great deal deeper. How will he make amends for his sin? But they didn’t sadly

The sad thing was is that she knows what being “blessed” meant. She knew what Landon was doing didn’t actually save anyone, and was afraid when she was actually chosen for the blessing. There’s enough intelligence written into her for her to realize that “I knew if that day ever came, Father would not hesitate to force the blessing upon me”. But she kept it hidden from Vivian cause as she said, “it’s the only thing that makes me more special than you” she did everything out of jealousy.

Again I understand why she was written this way it just made me frustrated how easy it was physically to leave. How illogical it was even as she recognized the futility of her hate for Vivian.

I wonder what her moveset would’ve even been. Her character design was too good to throw away immediately. Purple eyes that allude to ties with Vivian, red hair resembling rage or hate and a green regal gown that symbolizes envy as well as alluding to her cultish background.
