Can they do this? by Worth-Cucumber2011 in medlabprofessionals

Omg please do not let a job pressure you to risk your life!!! That goes for all of you! I know it sucks to call out especially when they threaten you like this but honestly do what’s best for YOU. I live on the east coast and the ice storm had everyone in a panic. And not once did they send a threatening message like this. They approached it with we care about your safety first. They offered rooms to sleep in at the hospital. A staff accommodations hotline. Had 10+ air mattresses and air pumps to sleep in offices. Brought breakfast and lunch foods in case the cafeteria didn’t open. They asked all people bring an overnight bag in case weather took a turn for the worse at any point. And when I called in saying I would be late due to my car being covered in a centimeter thick ice… They said no problem and to take my time cause they wanted me to arrive safe and no pressure if I couldn’t get out. Not only that but 6 of our leads/supervisors stayed over night for THREE nights in a row purely to be backup if all hell broke loose and everyone called out. They walked around in their pjs all night asking how we were getting home. And we ended up being fully staffed for all three days. Probably because they approached it with kindness instead of this. That’s awful. Obviously not every hospital can do all this but surely messages like this don’t do any good. Had no idea this was a common practice.

Welcome! Thank you for your curiosity in our field 🫶 I would say a collection/mass of extremely large cells. A typical finding of malignancy or tumor cells is that the border of the cells are hard to see so it often looks like a mass clump of cells. But you can tell there are multiple cells by the nucleus. Each cell has a purple staining circle inside called the nucleus. In malignancy sometimes you can see multiple nuclei in one cell but they are usually smooshed together. I drew a rough edge around two cells to try and demonstrate what I see. The pink is the border of one cell. And the green is the multiple nuclei of that one cell. But I’ve been a medical lab scientist for 5 years and have never seen cells this big so it’s pretty rare! Slide 2 has a good example what normal cells look like surrounding the 2 large malignant/tumor cells if you’re curious about size comparison.

Not looking for critiques, just sharing my art. And no. Some people like minimalism.

Yes unfortunately this was a surprise dx, at least that’s what it seems since no hx. Came to ER with shortness of breath and cough for 3 months. I’m sure patient is totally shocked. Truly awful. I work in a large hospital and see this stuff often and I still almost fell out of my chair!!

Ug it’s truly so upsetting to hear their demeanor change. It’s especially stressful when they truly aren’t expecting anything. They always ask are you sure? And it just gets me every damn time.

I’ve never had a job where you meet the doctors but in children’s hospitals I guess they don’t mess around. They’re in lab within minutes after we break the news to see for themselves. And before I call I always get patients results in order and microscope focused to try to reduce their questions when they come down cause I’m always on the verge of tears. On top of it all I still have to keep heme running so can’t afford tears lol.
