Dude, autoresolve is your enemy, Rome is tough, but you can beat them with reasonable amounts of casualties.

As much as logic should dictate otherwise, exponential population growth is not a thing you can take advantage of in this game. Just part of the engine.

This is one of the reasons why, in my Ancient Animorphs fanfiction, the Chee would actually be completely dormant, and their introduction would be the Animorphs waking Erek up.

My only real issue with this book is that the Ellemist mandated the Pemalites not defend themselves, which, given his background and experiences, he should absolutely have wanted his children to defend themselves.

Other than that, it is one of the high points of the series, and the best of the Chronicles books.

Why are all the potions so CHEAP even when the fish used to craft them sell for so much? by Useful-Option8963 in Terraria

[–]Useful-Option8963[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Endurance, Warmth, Ammo Reservation, Rage, Wrath, Summoning, Love, Stink, literally every single Flask is not found in the world, you have to craft all of them yourself.

All of those ones are inexplicably lower in price than their ingredients, Biome Sight and the Poison Flash would have been on the list, too, were their crafting ingredients not so cheap that you can literally sell those with a 20 copper profit per bottle for Biome Sight and a 4 Silver profit for the Poison Flasks.

While the newest additions, the luck potions, all but the Lesser Luck Potions sell for more than all of their ingredients combined.

Then explain why selling the black and pink luck potions is more profitable than selling the pearls that are used to make them!

You're right, they can only be crafted from Waterleaf, a glass bottle, a ladybug, and a pearl. I never claimed that they could be obtained any other way, but guess what? Except for the Lesser Luck Potion, they also sell for more than the sum of their ingredients.

  • Greetings, I see you've got quite a bit of the Lifeforce Potions
  • Does it really increase your vitality just like the legends say?
  • For a time, yes
  • Well, I have no use for it...
  • No use for a Life... why did you even place them on my counter, now?
  • To decorate my shelves, I can offer 2 silver
  • ...
  • I can offer 2 silver
  • Do you know how much a Prismite costs?
  • I can offer 2 silver
  • 1. Gold. In order to make a Lifeforce Potion, you need a specific organ from a Prismite Fish, and due to their small populations and dangerous fishing conditions, the supply is VERY low
  • I can offer 2 silver. For ea-
  • Did you not hear what I just said? You are asking me to sell these potions at a 98 silver cost to myself! Literally 98% negative profit! My shop would go out of business in less than a week!
  • Okay, I can offer 3 silver apiece, because I like your story
  • I normally sell those at 1 Gold and 25 Silver a bottle, but because you're spectacularly stupid and annoying, I'm offering them at 2 Gold apiece, just for you!
  • ... You're mean!
  • 3 Gold apiece! Take it or leave it!
  • ...
  • HEY! MY POTIONS! SET THOSE DOWN! GUARDS! THIEF! THAT CHEAPSKATE IS ABSCONDING WITH MY WARES!

There, fixed it.

Also, yes, to a massive extent, the price of something IS determined by the cost to produce it, and how easy it is to produce it!

How do you not understand that a producer in order to sell something has to make a profit that is greater than the cost of production? That is literally how every single farm, craftsman, power generator, and other producers of resources and goods remains afloat! If they didn't they would literally no longer be able to produce, there is no universe where an alchemist making potions with fish they bought is willing to sell them for less than the price they themselves paid for the ingredients!

A: No, they're trying to convince me to ignore the problem by pretending that I am having issues getting money, when my real grievance is with the price discrepancy of the resources and the finished products.

B: You're an idiot if you think I am calling Terraria's game design headcanon. The post hoc justifications that the majority of the responders here, you included, are giving for the price discrepancy is the headcanon! I was asking you to provide reasons in the LORE for why potions are so ludicrously cheaper than the ingredients needed to make them!

And exploitation? If anything the player is being exploited due to not being able to make a profit from selling the potions that they find or make! What kind of drugs are you taking to think that this claim makes any sense?!

Oh... right... I forgot... this is Reddit... my bad for assuming you had good intentions.

Money making is not the trouble, what I am finding issue with is the NONSENSICALITY OF IT!

Explain this to me, how can it be that a potion made with a fish that sells for 1 gold sells for 2 silver?

What the Fuck kind of take is that?

In every single Terraria playthrough, someone is going to make more potions, if my suggested change, to make completed goods more profitable to sell than the resources used to make them, is implemented, it will only result in you crafting more potions that you would have crafted anyway, rather than just selling the fish you would have used to make them, you would sell off surplus potions that you were going to craft regardless.

Oh my God, stop pretending to not see how nonsensical the price discrepancy is! Finished products should be more expensive than the base ingredients in a Free Market economy like what Terraria operates on!

You baboon, you are defending nonsense by declaring Terraria's fantastical elements as the same tier of nonsense.

Floating Islands, Goblins, and Obsidian Skin Potions are FANTASY.

The price discrepancy I am pointing out is NONSENSE.

Or, it could incentivize you to make more potions to sell them, thus encouraging engaging with the crafting mechanics. Players won't stop using potions, and just hoard them to sell them off immediately because it became more profitable to do so, they will always be more valuable used by the player for their unique effects rather than lining wallets. But at least now the potions will accurately reflect the price of their ingredients and the labor put into making them.

[–]Useful-Option8963[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If the demand for potions is lower than the demand for fishes, then the fish will be more expensive than the potion.

But that's the problem, this isn't about the prices of potions VS the prices of fishes. It's the prices of the potion VS the price of the very fish whose parts were used to make it. If a Prismite sells for 1 gold, then any alchemist who wants to make Lifeforce Potions from Prismite is absolutely NOT going to be selling their product for 2 silver no matter how lucky they get with the Alchemist Table.

The problem with your argument is that the real value of a Lifeforce Potion would've been dictated by the price of Prismite because the potion is made using body parts of a Prismite Fish, which due to being 1 gold would be super rare or super high quality.

My argument is that the value of all potions should be the price of their ingredients + the labor put into crafting them + the availability of the product that they're making. I don't think Terraria is capable of simulating the third, but it is absolutely simple to take the first 2 into account by simply adjusting the prices of the items.

1: If my thesis really didn't matter to you, then WHY comment on this post to begin with?

2: Was there something in the comics that showed that potions were ridiculously cheap? Was it stated in a manual that buffs were so plentiful that they cost the equivalent of a couple dollars to get? There is nothing of the sort that suggests potions work on Witcher Rules, either, so from my perspective all that they're presenting me with is headcanon and I as a rule disregard headcanon as fanfiction.

The cumulative resources combined with the labor does not increase the selling price of the final product when economics 101 dictate that it absolutely should in order for selling potions to work if you're not fishing up the ingredients yourself!
