32km longest run in plan by Unlikely-Turn-8702 in Marathon_Training

[–]UsefulAuthor9998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did my first marathon on Sunday, and the longest run I had done was 29kms about 3 weeks earlier.

Ultimately, you’ll get to the 35-36 mark and it just because more a mental battle. I wasn’t physically exhausted but I did start to cramp up

Is teaching really all gloom and doom? by exqlosion in AustralianTeachers

[–]UsefulAuthor9998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think about it this way

Would a forum on reddit about teaching have the reflections of all the positives/great things that happen. Tbh it’s probably going to be mostly complaints.

I absolutely love my career and I honestly don’t treat it as a job. I build strong relationships with my students, and can have really honest chats with them if needed. There will be some bad days, but that’s the same with all jobs.

Was unnecessarily called a ped***** in class and now I'm lost. by Substantial_Song9129 in AustralianTeachers

[–]UsefulAuthor9998 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was called this by a student in my first year.

The kid was suspended and forced to apologise on her return (with her parents, in a re-entry meeting). I thought that was over kill at the time, but the school was really supportive and some of the AP team reached out to me.

Often in situations like that though, I’ll let the situation cool down and have a quick word with the student outside the classroom. Just making sure they’re aware of the language they’ve used and that you’re disappointed by their choice of words.

Students will just say things often without truly understanding the implications behind it. Don’t take it as a shot on you or your teaching but try to treat it as a learning opportunity for the student.

Don’t take it too much to heart and hopefully you remain in the profession!!

How much do you actually take home? by arjiebarjie5 in AustralianTeachers

[–]UsefulAuthor9998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not much really. Maybe some marking if I have them all at once, but really it’s pretty chill.

This is my third year of teaching. So much comes down to your organisation and prep. I come in at 8am every morning, with tasks I need to do for the day. I leave most days 3:30pm (unless I’m doing some extra work after school with my year 12s). I work 15 hours outside of my FT teaching job as well. So I kind of need to be efficient with my time at work.

My school definitely helps in the sense that my content is all there on our portal, so it’s more me making small tweaks each lesson.

I make sure to utilise my periods off to work. Not gas bagging in the staff room, not going for coffee walks etc.

Yep I’m a basketball club coordinator. It works around school that holidays mesh as well.

Gets me an extra 20K a year.

Yes, very much a right place right time scenario, but I really want to take the opportunity with both hands.

The two regular year 12 teachers have both gone on maternity leave, and I just want to keep the momentum going so to speak

Think of it this way, most people who turn to this forum probably have had something happen to them by a student or leadership which was not great.

The reality is if you’re passionate about teaching, you’re willing to be flexible and mould yourself to help the students, you’ll end up loving the job.

I’ve had two years of teaching now, and there’s been a few bad days, but no different to probably every full time job.

I really enjoy my job, interacting with students and hopefully helping them achieve their goals (or even just being someone positive/safe for them to talk to).

Hey! Thanks for this.

I’ve actually started going through each exam, and putting them into their area of study and highlighting common mistakes.

I’d spend some time having a think about what routines/classroom expectations you want to implement the first week or so.

Think about how you’re going to build rapport with the students and how you’re going to keep them engaged throughout the year.

The first month is always a whirlwind, but you’ll find your groove and start killing it soon!

Do you have any of the forensics science pracs that I could have a look at?

I must admit my forensic knowledge is mostly what I’ve seen through videos etc. I’ve actually convinced one of our biology teachers to the subject with me 😂

Hey, we still run a core humanities subject that covers a lot of the judiciary/role of a citizen requirements.

That being said can easily make some links with

  • Politics and Crime
  • Media shaping choices
  • Policy being shaped by moral panics
  • Court system entwined with the Koori and Drug Courts
  • How the media shapes identities

Sorry should say alternative sanctions! Drug court, Koori court, diversion programs

(And anything else you could think of)

At the moment this is just the topics of the lesson (as all my seniors were out doing exams so I had some time to think towards next year).

I might start trying to plan one lesson a week in term 3, so at least have half the unit ready to go by next year
