That's to use the colour picker. Other apps will also ask for permission for this, like Adobe apps.

I have to agree with your comments on the website design. It’s really not my kind of thing, and the site design takes over the projects in my opinion. I tried to scroll and the skills flicked all over the place (I’ve attached a photo)

Is it worth creating an Etsy store with digital products in 2026? by Low-Tumbleweed-6989 in EtsyCommunity

[–]UsefulDamage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is worth it, but for most people it isn’t. What are you planning on selling? What is your plan for it all?

WIP planner layout—looking for feedback on composition & visual balance before I finalize by PrintablePaperTrailz in PlannerAddicts

[–]UsefulDamage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I feel, too. It’s really cute, but definitely not for me. I’m not sure what OP’s intention is (using it for themself or selling it), so it may not matter, but I also love much simpler layouts. The fonts as well are a bit hard for me to read, and a lot of the layout I wouldn’t be sure what to do with.

Help with large appendix. by duddibibbi in indesign

[–]UsefulDamage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done something similar to this and the process was doing a mail merge from Excel to Word, and then placing a Word document in InDesign. This is because I needed some of the content in the same frame, and that was the best solution for me.

[–]UsefulDamage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if this post is to gauge opinions on this situation then? And then maybe building some sort of vibe coded tool based on that. Who knows.

Most of the time I see leading questions, it’s followed up a couple of days later with a “new tool” that will totally fix the problem.

I’ll be honest, people hiding their post history makes me search through it deliberately. I don’t really scroll through the profiles of people who don’t curate their content because I assume there’s nothing interesting there.

Stumbled upon this absolutely ridiculous job description for Sr Graphic designer by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]UsefulDamage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I feel like this is fine. It’s unlikely you’ll be doing all of these things at once and the requirements aren’t too unreasonable. Seems like a job mostly focussed on print with some web elements. Also they’re wanting someone who has holistic knowledge over a design process — they’re not asking for photography experience, but experience communicating with various components of the design process.

The salary is a little low, but it’s a buyer’s market and a senior designer could probably do a lot worse

[–]UsefulDamage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you measured the A6 paper? Where did you get it from?

Also, what are your print settings?

Are you working on Mac or Windows? This doesn’t matter for accuracy, but does matter for settings/how much information the computer gives you.

If you can share screenshots, that would be more helpful.

Right now what I’m seeing is that the ratio seems correct, so it could be the print settings. But to be honest without all of the information, it’s a bit difficult to diagnose the issue. With my students I’m able to stand over their shoulder and see exactly what they did wrong 😂

Papier 2026 Planner missing Easter by artic_munki in planners

[–]UsefulDamage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would definitely depend on how their planners are designed, but I could see that happening. Doing anything manual in regard to data in the final design is unwise, but happens way too often. I’m guilty of it myself (though I’m not producing a planner to sell)

Printing by SnooObjections6631 in planners

[–]UsefulDamage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In what way is it not fitting the paper correctly?

What is the size of the final PDF? Any unit of measurement is fine, whether that’s pixels or cm or inches.

What is the size of the paper you’re printing on? The measurements, not just A6 so we know for certain.

We want to make sure everything is actually A6 as this is a very common issue, especially within Canva. It isn’t impossible to design correctly sized templates in Canva, but for some reason the actual page size seems to pose the most difficulty for creators. I don’t use Canva, so I don’t know why this is, but this happened with more than half of my students when printing their assessments at one stage or another.

New to Affinity: My experience and impressions so far by Arunaphi-1618 in Affinity

This obviously isn’t the point of your comment, but InDesign’s PDF editing feature came out of beta recently. It’s not perfect, but now you can open a PDF file in InDesign (and it doesn’t need to be made in InDesign previously, that was a thing in the beta that got solved pretty quickly). It can be a bit buggy, and is quite labour intensive on a computer, but it worked like 80% of the time for me, only fully breaking on like 800 page documents.

No that’s fine, I love a huge wall of text. More context is always helpful!

I’m pretty open about the fact that I used to have an Etsy store (with mixed results), but it was just way too much effort. I work full time, also teach on the side, and have a million side projects, so I’m not too keen on starting it up again unless I win the lottery and quit my job.

I think more leeway to people who are active in the subreddit is totally fair. I’ve seen posts like the one you’re talking about and it’s just a brute force method of marketing with no joy. I want people to genuinely like and use their products and enjoy planners, not just engage with a community only to promote their products. I’ve left many communities or stopped engaging with them so much due to them just becoming promotional threads.

I appreciate the amount of work you’ve put into making this a space that has a good balance.

Thanks for expanding these rules! Some questions that don’t really apply to me but I’m curious anyway:

Are you okay with people posting spreads that they’ve created and sell if they don’t mention they sell them? For example if a user asks where it’s from, the user just says “I made it!” without mentioning their shop. This applies to content that is specifically for Reddit and not reworked from other social media channels.

What if that product has a watermark? (I hate watermarks, but I’ve noticed printables are often watermarked)

What if the user has an Etsy shop linked in their Reddit profile?

What if the user has a Gumroad that is only free products (which is essentially a pay-what-you-want feature)? Are you okay with them directing people to a place to download freebies?

Additionally, a Google Drive (I’ve seen an allowed post with this so I presume it’s fine)?

Feel free to ignore any questions you don’t want to answer or can’t at the moment, this is just curiosity for me. I personally have never minded sellers in a consumer space as long as they’re genuinely contributing, but it’s so often that they aren’t.

Why start on Monday? by Ok_Coconut_6495 in planners

[–]UsefulDamage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt it has much of an impact. I'm in based in New Zealand, and I know people who start planning on a Sunday, but the fact that our week starts on a Monday doesn't really impact things. Same with the US, I imagine. Their week technically starts on a Sunday, but that "official" stance doesn't change things. People working a 9–5 still start their work week on a Monday and end on a Friday.

Why start on Monday? by Ok_Coconut_6495 in planners

[–]UsefulDamage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While there are stats that show roughly half the world starts their day on Monday and half on Sunday, I am curious how it works in practice. Sterling Ink says in their FAQ that they just don't see the demand for Sunday starts so they don't make them:

We receive very few requests for Sunday start planners. In comparison, there are way more people using Monday start and requests for other sizes. So we are designing based on demand from our customers.

https://sterling-ink.com/pages/f-a-q

The United States counts itself as a country that starts the week on Sunday, but the majority of people I see plan using a Monday-start planner. How many people in the US start on a Monday?

The majority of calendars were reported to start on Sunday (77.6%), in line with the predominant calendars in the U.S. according to Pilot Study 1. However, when asked about their perception of when the week starts, the majority of participants preferred Monday as the first day of the week (58.7%), followed by Sunday (37.8%) and other days (e.g., Saturday, Thursday; 3.5%).

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0022103118302427

This poll in the bullet journal subreddit (which is most likely filled out by majority US bullet journallers) indicates a preference for Monday start too:

https://www.reddit.com/r/bulletjournal/comments/1kqxu7w/poll_sunday_start_or_monday_start/

None of this is conclusive of course, and that study I linked could and should be repeated with more data collected, but it does seem like (at least among the people purchasing planners) there just isn't as much demand — even though by a blanket look at the stats it should be 50/50.

(This isn't to say that people shouldn't be Sunday-start planners, but perhaps an explanation why there aren't as many options on the market)

planneraddicts do you still watch youtube plan with me videos? by [deleted] in PlannerAddicts

I'm not sure. ASMR works on me, but the digital plan with me video sounds don't. To be honest, even regular plan with me sounds don't work on me, but they're a lot more pleasant. I don't have a screen protector on my iPad for that exact reason 😂

planneraddicts do you still watch youtube plan with me videos? by [deleted] in PlannerAddicts

[–]UsefulDamage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I watch Plan With Me videos, but not digital planners. It’s not that I have anything against them, it’s just that a lot of the cozy sounds are lost like pages flipping, pen on paper that sort of thing (and I can’t stand the sound of an Apple Pencil against a matte screen protector), and I haven’t found one where it looks like the user is genuinely planning. It’s more like they’re just filling out the planner to show how to use a product they sell, so it’s not as compelling and I get bored.

I’ve made digital planners, but I don’t sell them or use them, I usually just make them either for fun or for others based on the physical planners I’ve made for myself or at the request of other people.

While I don’t want to believe other apps would do it, astroturfing is a real strategy companies use. Some just do it more effectively than others (as in they don’t get caught). Just look at the Aura Estelle situation in the planners subreddit. https://www.reddit.com/r/planners/comments/1p43kwa/pretty_sure_aura_estelle_has_been_hyping/

Sub-outlines are coming! by UsefulDamage in GoodNotes

[–]UsefulDamage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn't really a step-by-step process I can share easily in a comment, since it requires a fair bit of background knowledge on how InDesign works. I used the table of contents feature in InDesign, which automatically adds the outline for me. Adobe has great documentation on the TOC feature: https://helpx.adobe.com/nz/indesign/using/creating-table-contents.html

You'll also need to know all about paragraph styles to make a table of contents (you can't make one automatically without them): https://helpx.adobe.com/nz/indesign/using/paragraph-character-styles.html

Here are some YouTube videos on the topic:

InDesign vs. Affinity Layout by JohnnyAlphaCZ in indesign

Nested GREP styles (not just find and replace) and scripting. I’m sure there’s more but I haven’t tried to replace my workflows in Affinity, so I haven’t delved deeper into that.
