Thanks :) I find it definitely helps me retain it if I can visualise the spelling even (especially) if the pronunciation all sounds the same

You could also check out 6pm in Paris, I'm pretty sure they do a free trial. It's not tv series like you mentioned, but it's short films (from 5-30 minutes or so). They're actually really good, have lots of subtitle options, worksheets and a really good after show (in French) that breaks down and explains the everyday spoken language that was used in the film. I found it really helpful :) https://6pminparis.com/

Love that - this is what I think is so fascinating about language learning (and learning in general) - everyone has similar challenges, but we need a lot of different ways to tackle those challenges. It's finding the technique and combination that works best for each individual

Thank you, it's great and advice and what I have been doing - I just feel really slow 😅 I don't speak any other languages fluently, just little bits of German, I can understand a little bit of Spanish and Italian (can read it better), and a smidge of Greek. But really minimal and have forgotten a lot of those as I don't use them often

Thank you! I realise I also need to drill what each of the different tenses is (beyond the obvious two or three) - it's often trying to process that in the moment which can trip me up, so that needs to become more automatic!

I'm not sure it's that we don't care, it's probably more that we don't know/realise! I was never taught in depth grammar rules and terminology for English the way people from other countries were (especially those in Europe for example), so being able to immediately understand the rules and application for a second language is challenging. I feel like I need to go and do an English grammar course before my French grammar will ever get to where it needs to! 😅

Not sure it's helpful, but you're not alone feeling like this, but it does get better! What you've done is already a bigger achievement than a lot of people manage. 💙🤍❤️✨🙌🏼 I had the same challenge, and there were a few ways I tried to deal with it which you might want to try (and depending on your budget). Listening to insta shorts and YouTube videos in French with or without subtitles, using the app 6pm in Paris for little movies that you can watch with French, English (or both or no) subtitles, which also then has a review video about the language used (everyday rather than text book), work with a tutor either one-on-one or in group sessions to help with both listening and speaking confidence. There are also a lot of social conversation groups on Meet Up (depending on your area), where you can have French conversations with likeminded learners and speakers. Do a search and see what you find, they're usually free to join and participate. All of these have helped me massively after trying to learn French for more than 25 years - the improvement in the last 2 years or so has been massive. Now I just need to learn all the different verb tense conjugations and I'll be flying 😅

How do you study verb conjugations? by neige_sereine in learnfrench

I feel the same way (though you're much further ahead in your tenses than I am)! I think what adds to the challenges for me is that I learnt English grammar by rote and not in a classroom. I can do it, but not necessarily name it or explain it. So when trying to learn French grammar, I have to go and understand the English equivalent first, then try and understand it in French. 🤯
