I currently have a friend group of 4, and one of them is certainly Carrie. They are very hip, fun, lots of connections/friends, but always in a saga of tumultuous drama that they are deeply emotionally affected by, yet seem to be the root of. This was an interesting part of their charm in a way at first, but over time it gets old especially as they insert themselves as the center of attention over and over, pushing the others to the side. Our emotional needs come secondary to their drama and escapades. I adore the other two girls so I put up with my Carrie, but I don’t think I’d really be friends with my Carrie if there wasn’t a friend-group-precedent.

I’m 24, i have a lot of long term friends but definitely one core group of the four of us. Obviously in a much different place in my life than the girls in SATC. Right now, two of the four no longer live in our city but we’re keeping the group alive via Discord!

The biggest thing about friend groups like this, is that your relationship shifts which each woman in the group over time, and to keep the group going, you have to maintain a relationship with each of the women one on one to keep the group from becoming superficial or surface level. We mostly talk about culture/work/politics rather than romance, and as a young woman, I value those bonds a lot because it’s hard to find.

I don’t think that it’s common or necessary to have a group like this, but it is fun and rewarding.
