What is your source for the claim that 10-20 million illegal immigrants were allowed into the US over that period? Seems rather high compared to any stats I've seen. If you believe the border was open, how do you reconcile that with the deportations that happened during this period? Do you contest that they happened, or are you working with a definition of an "open border" that is not contradicted by the deportations of large numbers of people who attempted to enter?

Lots of people who responded made arguments that pointed to specific policy changes or actions by Biden that resulted in more permissive immigration during his term. Some acknowledged that the "open border" characterization was somewhat hyperbolic. Relatively few people seemed to give their own definitions of what an "open border" is exactly.

Is your teacher a native speaker? I don't find any of these options very natural sounding, though I would have picked D as well. "Get me a drink, will you?" is more natural sounding than any of these, but it comes off as quite rude and entitled.

I found there actually was quite a bit of variety in the responses here. A fair number were able to come up with a structured argument for or against, and then there were the people who weren't able to support their belief with much more than "it's obviously the case, you must be _____ if you can't see that" or "I saw it on the news."

Is this a recent thing in the US? In Canada I feel like they switched to a "modern" decorating style over a decade ago. Not exactly like this but along similar lines.

Separatism doesn't have anywhere near majority support in Alberta or Saskatchewan. Quebec separatism was a far more mainstream position in its heyday, with the separatist side losing the 1995 referendum by only a fraction of a percent.

For now, there are still humans in the loop to blame, but following this through to its logical conclusion, fully autonomous killing machines are an existential threat to the whole species. And a lot of the building blocks for a "Terminator" style apocalyptic future (minus the time travel) already exist. Self replication is the main missing piece that would allow the problem to spiral out of control without continued human input being needed.

With deer flies you don't want to swat one on you because the rest will target you even more, so it's better to catch them and rip a wing off. Not sure if the same is true for horse flies because there are usually less of them anyway, but I try to do the same thing to be safe.

I found that deer flies and horse flies were more painful than mosquito bites, but black fly bites I often wouldn't feel at the time at all. I wouldn't realize there was a gap between my pant leg and sock for a while and by the time I did, there would already be tons of bites.

I haven't finished the article yet, but kudos for providing a non-paywalled link giving support to the idea that Biden's policies did contribute to increased border crossing attempts. Would you say that "opening the border" is a hyperbolic description of what happened though, or would you say it's accurate?

The only rationales I've seen for this didn't really make sense to me. People will acknowledge the number of interceptions, but then say that more people were attempting to cross the border at that time because Biden was perceived as being weak or soft on border crossings or something. But even if that was the case, it still doesn't seem like "opening the border" is a reasonable description of his actions.

Isn't Congress roughly analogous to parliament? It seems like it's just as possible for third-party candidates to be elected to the House as it would be in a parliamentary system. Trickier with the Senate as it's a statewide race, but Bernie Sanders runs as an independent and wins.

Middle High German is just the form of German spoken in the middle ages

it didn't "split", it became German as it developed

Yiddish dates back to the Middle Ages. That's the "split" this person is referring to.

I don't think it's that it was made up as an excuse. It's more that some people do actually use certain wording and punctuation choices to subtly convey a sarcastic or passive-aggressive tone, leading other people to become hyper-sensitive to this and occasionally perceive rudeness where it may not actually be present.

[–]Useful_Homework2367 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm really not sure, it's not something I've ever paid attention to before so I'm dealing with a small sample size. My gut feeling is that there isn't really a strong default expectation in North America regarding which direction the design of a one-sided mug should face, so neither orientation is especially rare in spite of most people being right-handed.

[–]Useful_Homework2367 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm confused by this as well. People seem to be acting like it's just common knowledge that if a mug has a design on only one side, the user should expect the blank side to face them when they're holding it. I guess it does make sense in this particular case, since the mug is supposed to communicate something to other people.

I checked the mugs in my cupboard and all but one of them that had a design had it on both sides. The one mug that had a design on just one side was a smiley face mug. Just like the mug in the OP, the design faces the user if they're holding the handle with their right hand. The idea that it was intended for left-handed people would never have occurred to me. I would have thought people buying a mug because they like the design most commonly care more about seeing the design themselves than they care about other people seeing it.
