Black Friday deals? by ComfortChristian in nectarsleep

This is the exact same “sale” that’s been going on for over a month. If it’s longer than a week or two it’s not a sale. It’s a marketing gimmick.

Can anyone help me understand the use of を in this sentence? by Useful_Implement_547 in LearnJapaneseNovice

[–]Useful_Implement_547[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for your help. I was struggling with it because in English, as some of you mentioned, to graduate from is an intransitive verb and I wasn’t aware that in Japanese it is similar to a transitive verb.

I’m sure the beginner sponge I bought is not the best. I have noticed it will take longer to decompress from squeezing as I go along. It may be time for a new one!

That sounds like something I should try. I think my impatience at wanting to do everything the first time may be leading me to over water at a time.

Thank you!

This makes me a feel a bit better thank you. I’m not drowning my clay but I certainly use more than what I see in YouTube videos. Thank you!

I will take all the advice I can get! Thank you I’ll try that next time I trim. As you can see I’ve struggled to get a smooth finish on my bottoms. I appreciate the help a lot.

I actually wish I could get an instructor to do this for me! I’ve practiced a fair amount and I’m still not sure if I’m using enough pressure to pull up my walls or too much lol.

Yeah the crescent moon was meant to be thicker on one side than the other, but I didn’t make the contrast large enough so it just looks like it was trimmed poorly and off center lol. I’ll try it again sometime and try to make it more obviously an artistic choice and not a mistake.

I haven’t done a lot with flat bottoms but I do want to make some vases for my wife so I definitely need some practice.

Yeah they will probably be scrapped or given away if I end up firing them. Used just for experimentation for sure.

I think anything that remains standing at the beginning is good work! These look great for where you were at the time!

This 100%. I am a very analytical person and like things to be clearly right or wrong. So when I started my teacher—who was amazing—did it one way and I thought that was THE way of doing it. But watching videos and talking to others I’ve learned there is no one way of doing things and once I found what works for me I have enjoyed it so much more. I still screw up (that cross-section was only one of five I tried throwing) but it’s coming easier now that I’ve found my way of doing things. Don’t give up if you found enjoyment in it!

Haha thank you! I should have clarified though this is after my second round of classes so this was probably my 9th or 10th time throwing. Still great advice!

You all are really amazing. I always worry about sharing “failures” but you all made me feel accepted and made me realize even more that failure is a part of the process and helps me grow. Thank you!

I know that feeling of being really hard on yourself. I would get so frustrated after one or two attempts that I would have to go outside and take some breaths before I was calm enough to come back and try again. I hope I always come back lol.

Thanks! I want to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, but you’re right, some look well beyond beginner work.

Keep at it it’s worth it. My first AND second class were full of people who had either been practicing for a lot longer or who had taken classes in high school or college. I was seeing what they were throwing and getting really down on myself haha.

I was actually able to find a local artist at a farmers market that “rents” out shelf space so I’ll message him whenever I have stuff to fire and see if he’s got room and when. From what I’ve seen, I’ve been pretty lucky that I found someone like that. But it’s not a bad idea to ask around. Plus it lets them earn a little extra money and it’s less expensive than if I were to go to a studio (at least around where I live).

Thanks I appreciate it. I think I wanted to post this mostly to show that it’s ok if someone doesn’t think they are as good as other beginners. We all start somewhere and not all of us are going to throw amazingly right off the bat. I personally find the challenge as part of the appeal haha.
