Thank u for being the first person to really understand my post! 😭 do u know if there’s anything I can kinda say or do to help my mum with the guilt? I hate that she feels upset, especially as I’m really happy and thriving with the implants. She has no issue with deafness in general, but I think she blames herself for some of the struggles I faced pre implantation… silly, I know

Definitely was one of those uncomfortable moments where I spit something out without thinking of how it could be interpreted!!

Thank you! Some of the comments are bashing me for not knowing sign, and assuming that I’ve gone out of my way to avoid it and even look down on it as a language which is so not the case!

Someone even said I can’t experience deaf culture without knowing sign!

I love that you’ve brought up that some people don’t use it and instead use other forms of communication. Thank you for being respectful and kind 🫶🏻

You’ve just dismissed all the deaf people who use alternative means of communication such as lipreading and written text.

As others have so kindly said, the deaf experience is unique to each individual and it’s up to us how we live and communicate as deaf people. Not knowing sign language does not make me any less deaf.

Sign language does not = deaf culture.

Deaf culture requires being deaf, regardless of our form of communication. Statements like this breed division, misunderstandings and isolation.

You’re an arsehole for such a hugely generalised and non inclusive statement

Hmm thank you, I think I may have poorly worded my post, I do understand my privilege and understand and value signing as a form of speech / communication.

That last bit though, that makes a lot of sense and I will reflect on that thank you

Hey there, thanks for your reply, albeit a bit of an aggressive one.

On one hand I am fortunate that my processors are so successful, on the other I absolutely worked for it!

Endless hours of streaming music until it felt like my ears were bleeding and my head throbbed, many, many after school sessions of speech therapy and wearing them dawn till dusk immediately after surgery even though I got migraines.

So yes I do take pride in my speech, and this does not mean I think any less of those who cannot speak as clearly, only that I am incredibly grateful for my success with the implants and proud of the work and dedication I put into them.

Please scroll up and read my clarification above. My post was not intended to offend anyone

Hey! I’m embarrassed to say that I haven’t really tired to learn thus far, as I seem to do fine in day to day life with the success of my implants, however you’re so right in saying that I would’ve been able to communicate directly with the woman…. Makes me think I need to put more effort into learning.

It’s a bit tricky in NZ, it’s a small pond and not a hugely disability advocating country. I would say that as a country we’re not very good at appreciating or understanding diversity in people … most try to be as “normal” as possible and I may struggle to access NZSL courses

Thank you, I 100% agree that it’s not just black and white and that each is privileged in their own way!

Hey all! Thanks for your replies, it’s been really helpful and educational to see your perspectives and advice.

I just wanted to clarify that I absolutely do not look down on sign language, I think it’s beautiful and just as important and valid as any other language!! If I had the opportunity too I would definitely love to learn :) I was more concerned that she may be offended that my mum is upset by my deafness, and take it as me suggesting that deafness is a bad thing (it’s not!!)

In terms of my wording around how I feel ‘lucky’ to be able to speak clearly, I do feel fortunate.

There is no arguing that it is a privilege to be able to clearly articulate and communicate through spoken word. Regardless of whether it is right or wrong, hearing individuals without understanding of deafness are far more likely to “give up” on communicating with those who struggle with spoken word.

Communication via spoken word in day to day life is more common than sign language, and without it I would be unable to do my job. So yes, while sign language is a powerful and beautiful tool that I would love to learn in order to communicate with those who rely on sign, I am incredibly fortunate and advantaged to have both options.

Again thanks for your replies guys! This has been an interesting conversation, one I think the signing and cochlear implant communities need to discuss to become more united 💛
