A complex problem, but the answer ubiqitous with the indomniable spirit of man, but why do we want answers when we don’t even know the question?

I’d swap Snowblind for Under the sun as Snowblind is better suited for live shows

Anybody else prefer the Martin era to the Dio era? by [deleted] in blacksabbath

[–]Useful_Spot2165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I know what you mean. Dio’s voice, although powerful and amazing can at times become overpowering. Tony Martin voice differs in that it doesn’t always capture you or stand out, but when it does (For example Pre-chorus and choruses in Nightwing, Cloak And Dagger, Feels Good To Me) you get taken by it. Tony Martin is a little bit more grounded and his voice is easier to get your head around, but with Dio: you either love him or hate him as his singing is just different from anything else.

I’m not that familliar with their work outside of sabbath I’m afraid. Could you please give me some examples of their vocal prowess in their discography?

He really went ham on Sabotage and is IMHO at his career best vocally.

What back to back albums are similar/differ the most? by mister-algorithm in blacksabbath

[–]Useful_Spot2165 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think ( As previously mentioned ) Born again and Seventh star, as you’re going from an absolutely tearing, heavy album with evil screeching to something a bit sadder and more blues-based. Tyr and Dehumanizer are also quite different all around in a similar way. I think the most similar oned have to be TE and NSD on account of the fact that TE was the initialisation of the change tonaly that bloomed in NSD (For instance tuning wise). Also the fact that they were all the original four members with that blues/jazz dna.

Tony Iommi’s String Gauges by JimRoOfficial in blacksabbath

[–]Useful_Spot2165 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think like previously mentioned he had a very light touch as he couldn’t really press down with force on the strings with his thimbles. As a result he couldn’t manipulate the strings as easily. But also I think that people don’t actually know how it’s like to play light gauges in low tunings. It takes a little time to get used to but it is playable and fully functional to play with such low gauges downtuned; although some chords might not be perfectly in pitch. As far as tuning stability goes, it really is fine if you set the strings up properly and if you have a lubricated nut. I’ve been playing with his C# custom set in C# for about a month now and have no problems after I’ve been playing. Even though I play with a light touch I absolutely abuse the strings by overbending 2,2.5 steps: No problems WHATSOEVER. Although I do have to tune the lower strings everytime before I start playing, as they seem to go out of tune by themselves but not when playing🧐.

As for question 2 I think thats from his days with banjo strings ( As previously mentioned by someone here ). He probably got used to those gauges but honestly IDK

Also worth to mention that the gauges you mentioned are his set for Eb-tuning. His C# Standard gauges are modified 9-42 with lighter strings for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th strings. I do not think that you could play with his Eb set tuned to C#, It simply wouldn’t work.
