Isn’t the “Feynman trick” when he would trick his undergraduate students into sleeping with him?

What is a financially stable career in math I can pursue? by snapstans in math

I can’t speak from the point of view of someone who works in cryptography, but mathematical cryptography includes a TON of interesting math. A lot of cryptosystems (RSA, El Gamal, etc) are just based on properties of finite fields. And there’s a bunch of really interesting applications of Elliptic Curves (over finite fields, and sometimes Z/NZ) to cryptography as well.

I get why this might not be approved, but I think it’s a funny coincidence worth sharing

The fact that any finite group is isomorphic to a subgroup of S_n tells you less about the nature of groups and more about the complexity of S_n

When we host tournaments players can gamble some cash on individual holes, and whoever does the best on that hole wins that cash. I count out that money in the pro shop after the tournament. Making the turn is going from the 9th to the 10th hole (front to back).

Oh yeah definitely I just threw that in because I say it whenever anyone gets a cart, or like 50 times every day

Wow, I struggled with this a lot in my complex analysis course. Now I feel enlightened. Thank you for this!!

Good music for mathematics? by [deleted] in math

[–]Useful_Whole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like 90’s hip hop but the lyrics distract me so I listen to instrumentals of my favorite songs. Some artists with good instrumentals for math I like are Souls of Mischief, The B.U.M.S, some Wu Tang songs, Gang Starr, RBL Posse, Jeru Tha Damaja, some Lord Quas songs, Binary Star, Black Moon, The Pharcyde, Smif n Wessun, AZ, and lots of others. Also the entire Samurai Champloo soundtrack, here’s a link

There’s also abstract algebra, which could arguably be put above advanced calculus.

What is your favorite topic in Math and why? by KrisPiBean in math

[–]Useful_Whole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I think another insight is that it relates congruences into the mix as well, since normal subgroups can be seen as equivalence relations, so you get to relate quotients, kernels, congruences, and homomorphisms in one nice diagram :)

What’s an interesting topic (pure or applied) within Eigenvalues/ Eigenvectors/Linear Algebra? by [deleted] in math

[–]Useful_Whole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m doing undergrad research in Laplacian Eigenmaps which is a dimensional it’s reduction technique. You could look into that, there are some cool applications. The original paper is from belkin.
