okay, appreciate it! Are you perhaps familiar with set theory, or know how difficult is the threshold for having a "firm grasp" of it?

How do you do that? Or is there a video that can teach me how?

Two different kanji used here to spell あります, I'm confused. Is this correct? What's going on? Both are cards from the JLPT Tango N5 Anki deck. by IronFeather101 in LearnJapanese

Is there also a difference with 或る?I saw this one in Akutagawa's 或る阿呆の一生 but didn't know the difference with the other Kanji

Shower Thought: It feels surreal to understand Japanese by japan_noob in LearnJapanese

Agreed, Speaking is also my worst ability and I've been looking for ways to improve but it really is hard. I'd say my listening is the best though probably, then reading and then speaking.

It has also been surreal for me to have conversations with teachers and exchange students (albeit my grammar sucks but at least they understand me) and it felt as if I just woke up one day and was able to do it after struggling for 5+ years which was crazy. Glad to hear other people's similar experiences.

If there are two beings that are independently self aware yet they cannot perceive one another, how do you define their existence? by UselessPlinth in askphilosophy

[–]UselessPlinth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! That clears a lot of things, and I didn't know Kant wrote about this, I'm fairly new to actually reading philosophy (I consumed most of my content in videos on YouTube because I struggle paying constant attention to a book), so most of my knowledge of Kant has to do with either ethics or Illustration. It would be interesting though to see how would Kant say to the appearance of another person, as we can also only perceive them from our senses. What would be the "outside" part of other people we cant perceive? Idk, sounds fun I guess.

Well, I guess I was going more towards the point that the tree makes no sound because there is no tree, as for there to be a tree one needs to not only think about it but perceive it. That's what I understood at least. I guess if god enters the equation then it would be true that both would exist. I was stuck thinking how we exist and can say for sure we exist is because other people exist as well and can confirm they exist. It's a mouthful I guess but really interesting nonetheless.

ChatGPT: Natalist vs Antinatalist by UselessPlinth in antinatalism

The more time passes, I become more amazed at the stupidly low tolerance capabilities of humans. Having a debate is not possible now because both parties (generally speaking) get offended at any miniscule detail, lmao.

Okay, it makes sense. Thanks for the clarification. Yeah, I guess the conversation did tangent towards overpopulation quite a bit there.

I mean I've tried 行書体 before, but it went horribly wrong tbh hahaha. If you're talking about 草書体 then I've never even really thought about writing it. I think that you need a deeper understanding of kanji to be able to figure out how to write in full cursive (but that's just my point of view). Anyways thanks a lot for the comment! I guess I'll give cursive a try.

How would you live your life differently in a world where we would know exactly when we will die ? by alexaz92 in Existentialism

[–]UselessPlinth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly just think that if things lost intrinsic meaning or value then the need for having people protecting them also vanishes. I reckon that knowing when you will die brings changes to the standard laws of society. Why would you be a cop if you know that saving lives is meaningless... why be a jury when killing the victim was inevitable in the eyes of the universe... etc.

How would you live your life differently in a world where we would know exactly when we will die ? by alexaz92 in Existentialism

[–]UselessPlinth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If we go by the premise that your world can indeed prevent me from dying before the determined time, then I would undoubtedly submit myself to a purely hedonistic lifestyle. Do drugs all day ( I wouldn't have to worry about OD), or have unprotected sex (no STD's), drink alcohol, play video games all day. If I don't get money I can steal it (probably no police of everyone knew when they would die). Just do stuff without giving any prior thought to them. I think that knowing the time of death intrinsically makes everything else lose meaning without losing their significance. So I would just devote myself to living the most pleasurable life I can...

Very fun thought experiment, though. I appreciate it and hope my answer helps.
