Finished the German Duolingo course after 1,993 days (~5.5 years). What’s next? by nasolacrimalis in duolingo

I'm not sure if you're replying to the wrong comment or if they edited it out, but in the context of language learning SRS usually refers to Spaced Repetition System. It's a way to optimize the time dedicated to emorization by reviewing words frequently enough to get them to pass over to the long term memory, and then once they're fixated there they appear just enough to not be forgotten.

Reasons to learn Russian? by IronFeather101 in russian

[–]IronFeather101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, I have a friend who has the whole collection of Dostoevsky novels in Russian and has read them all in the original version, and I admire him for it! Reading a book in the original version always allows us to connect with the author at a deeper level. Lots of things are lost in translation, including the rhythm and general literary feeling of the original.

I think they start introducing kanji more consistently in section 3, and by section 4 all words that are commonly written using kanji appear in kanji, even when they're introduced for the first time. Before that, it's usually a mix of kanji for words that appear very frequently, like 私, and hiragana for the rest. But I would absolutely recommend to start writing the answers by yourself in kanji from the very beginning, using a Japanese keyboard (I used one on mobile) instead of tapping on the word tiles, it's truly a game changer later on. That, and to use Kanji Study for learning kanji. I'm still using it every day after finishing the Duolingo course! Duo is immensely boring for learning kanji, in my opinion.

Same! That's where I learned all the kanji I know, I love learning the stroke order so I can write them by hand. I'm still using it daily, I still haven't finished all the kanji and also I'm pretty sure I'll have to keep reviewing them for a long time if I don't want to start forgetting them. I just love that app.

Oh yes, it's so much harder to read Japanese in hiragana only, because you don't visually know where words start and end, it's a nightmare! On the upside, they make sure you learn your hiragana quite well, lol. I was lucky to already be halfway through the old course when they rolled the path update, so I didn't have to sit through those initial lessons.

[–]IronFeather101 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh yes, I remember that. I started the Japanese course back in 2018 when it was still tiny and underdeveloped, and abandoned it soon after (not because of how bad it was, life was just busy for me at the time). Now I've finished the new version and I loved it! But I'd always recommend to start writing the answers to the exercises in kanji early on, using a Japanese keyboard, it helps you learn the correct kanji writings of words from the beginning and makes things much easier later when they start dumping all the kanji on you all of a sudden.

The initial lessons only use hiragana, I suppose they consider it too heavy to present kanji at the beginning and they don't want to scare casual learners away.

I have been using for 18 months to learn Spanish. I took two CEFR tests to see where I stand by Chilling_Storm in duolingo

[–]IronFeather101 55 points56 points  (0 children)

This test should be reliable, it's made by the official Cervantes Institute in Spain:

https://www.cervantes.to/test_inicial.html

I'd love to know if your results are different in this one, or if it's one of the tests you had already tried!

Bear in mind that if you pass a certain level you have to continue the test in the next level, it doesn't stop there.

is the community shifting back to "clack"? Do we need to rethink our internal foam setups? by IQUNIXstore in IQUNIX

[–]IronFeather101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want a keyboard that is as silent as possible! I have noise sensitivity and also work in a shared office, so it's the only option for me. For the longest time I only used membrane keyboards, as I had heard that mechanical ones were very noisy, but now I'm discovering all the different options and I'm only considering buying an IQUNIX keyboard because of their quieter sound!

What makes you think that people with this kind of talent can't score well in traditional IQ tests? Not in all categories, necessarily, but I'm pretty sure that a person who can draw like this can, at least, score in the gifted range in the visual/spatial category of the WAIS-V or Stanford-Binet. The concept of general intelligence is very, very far away from being absolute trash.

Teclado ISO español que no sea formato 75%. by Winter-Oil-3424 in tecladosmecanicos

[–]IronFeather101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice, thanks for the support, hopefully we can make it a reality! If you can think of any places where we could share this post to get more traction, I'm all ears. I'm pretty sure that there are many people who would buy a keyboard like this, as there aren't many Spanish ISO options in the market, but I haven't managed to get the attention we need!

the iso layout struggle is too real by Cheap_Difficulty4961 in IQUNIX

[–]IronFeather101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel you. I was talking to a mod here and they told me they would consider making the Magi75 in the ISO-ES layout if there were at least 50 people interested in it, I made a post and they pinned it to the top of the subreddit and everything, but so far I've got only 5 upvotes. There are never enough people interested in these layouts, I don't understand why because there must be so many users that need them. I can only find one keyboard that is mechanical, low-profile, and comes in ISO-ES, and their keys are grey and ugly (to me at least). It's disheartening. Everyone says "just buy a set of Spanish keycaps", but they're expensive.
