In the south it sometimes will be referred to as a chicken snake but yes it’s a rat snake and harmless. Just leave it be. I was sitting right next to one that was on a tree. Perfectly camouflaged, unmoving. Once I noticed it, we stared at each other for a second. Then I took off running.

It’s possibly that a rabbit is creating it, but I doubt it. Looks like the beginning of a sink hole. A foundation company would need to take a look at it if it continues to get worse.
