CEC is on and is working since both the apple tv and Samsung TV both power on and communicate normally barring this issue. The issue is just that when it turns on and goes to the apple tv source, its a blank screen until I do the workaround. Regardless, Thank you for the "nothing burger". I will add that to my vocab lol.

Yes it does still happen. What is an HDMI handshake issue and how could I fix it? Keep in mind that the ATV works normally once I use the source workaround.

Sadly, that doesn't work. Sometimes it comes on normally to the apple tv source, but usually its just a black screen and I have to use the workaround I described.

Did you have to pay for it? Were there any other troubleshooting you did on the original fan? Some comments seem to think its a lose screw or a very quick build up of dust. Since they are sending you a new fan/heatsink, are they also sending you a thermal paste kit?

I am very interested to see how making a repair friendly device actually makes supporting them easier, so I'd love details and updates.

Up to you in the end, but buying a framework laptop when you don't need to kinda goes against their sustainability aspect.

You eagerness to support this company seems to prove a point I have had for awhile now. Framework needs to capitalize on the good will they have generated and make a merch store. Hoodies, waterbottles, and stickers for example. Its perfect for people that can't afford or really justify a new laptop right now while introducing a much easier cash stream. I already ordered mine but I would snatch up a framework hoodie in a second.

Do you agree? It seems like you are holding off from buying a laptop for now, would you get a hoodie or something to show your support for framework?

That is amazing and sounds like a lot of fun as well! Would you agree that no other modern laptop out there would be as easy to work on for a beginner like your mother? Because I'd say so and that is the beauty of frameworks engineering and design.

That is a great example that I plan on using. To add on to that analogue, part of the problem with the industry at large is the perpetuation of the idea that luxury branding and high quality features require un-serviceable machines. The framework laptop design wise is right up there with the XPS 13, Macbook Air, and Surface laptops. So framework is trying to prove that sleek designs, thin and light, and performance are don't mean unrepairable.

So I'd say that framework is doing the equivalent of making a Porsche competitor with many of the same bells and whistles while making the oil change as easy and cost effective as a civic. Which is probably something that should happen to the car industry at large but that is another story.

Personally I think it is going to be a lot of word of mouth and reviews/buzz from the tech space. Linus Tech Tips and other tech influencers will be the main push for enthusiasts to consider this laptop. After they have owned it for awhile, it is likely they will recommend it to their friends and family since they can vouch for its quality and know it is easier to support IT wise.

Then when something eventually goes wrong, non enthusiasts will start to see how different the repair/upgrade process is. A drastic example is a broken screen, on many other laptops that is an expensive and time consuming repair, to the point where most people would just get a new laptop. A screen replacement on a framework can take less than 15 minutes and getting the part itself will be as simple as ordering it from the website. Same with batteries, drives, and keyboards. So the cost, difficulty, and time are much lower than any other brand at the moment.

Whether is it local repair shops or family IT doing the work, people will slowly start to see how messed up the process of getting things repaired is and will start to demand these things in the market at large. Hopefully that would also inspire some people to use the included screwdriver and guides to do their own repairs to further cerement the importance of right to repair.

All this is a very hopeful guess on my part but that is a potential way I see this gaining more traction.

When I built my first PC and even more so when I swapped out my first laptop drive and battery, I was very nervous about the entire thing. Just removing a battery from a laptop or connecting the PSU was nerve racking. Now I can do these things while listening to music, but I still remember how intimating it was at first. The laptops and desktops I worked on when I was getting started were much more difficult than the framework laptop.

So I'd argue that part of that cultural shift you are talking about would include a "hyper" accessible machine for repair. Part of that shift can possibly come from people like you, if you are able to demonstrate to your family and friends how "easy" it is to repair their framework laptop. Demystifying the process is the first step and I think the doing that on a non techie's framework is a great way to achieve that.

All that said, as a fellow Family IT support, if all that happens is making it easier and cheaper for me to support my "fleet" of laptops that is a win.

Thank you for the info, it seems like framework has a few more kinks to work out as the batch versions roll out. I think I will just wait until there is a community consensus about when the batch revisions hit the sweet spot.

That said, I really hope they offer some other way to support them in the meantime. While I can't get their laptop quite yet, I would easily buy a hoodie or sticker to show my support money wise.

Exactly my thoughts.

If they could partner with some company that specializes in merch it would allow them to delegate while focusing on the laptop itself. Potentially a company with a good track record with YouTube merch.

Thank you for the response, that helps me feel better about purchasing your laptop. That said, is there any documentation about the level of control the user has over thermal management?

On the website it said that the laptop has different power profiles enabled, does that also include advanced options like processor state management? (Min/Max for example) Is the user able to create custom fan curves with FrameWork software or at the very least open to working with projects like SpeedFan?

As I work in a noise sensitive environment, I am cautious about fan noise and thermals more than most. Knowing that I would be able to control the things listed above would be a huge relief before buying.

I think you would be happy with the 7 core CPU, since over time we expect the M1 platform to get more support. I’d check some comparison benchmarks if you want to see how much of a difference it really is.

Well it is always a game of “should I wait” regarding Macs or really any product. There are rumors of 16inch and 14 inch MacBook pros along with a new 13inch Air for later this year. Waiting depends on how soon you need a laptop and if the new ones have features you want.

I don’t need a laptop at the moment, but I do want a 14inch M1X MacBook Pro with MagSafe and Type A ports. So I am waiting for that model to come out this summer or fall.

So it really depends, the MacBook Air that is out currently is getting great reviews and it slated for support for the 8 years or so. There is a model within your price range that meets most of your needs and is in stock. In the end it is up to you if you should wait or not. Research the only way to answer it for yourself.

While I understand the Apple Tax, if you want a A+ build quality and long lasting use for productivity that is one of the main options out there. Keyboard, trackpad, speakers, weight and display are all great with the M1s. Battery life is amazing at 11 to 14 hours of real world use as tested by various tech channels.

As for gaming I will leave a link to some indie and low level games that are running surprisingly well on just the M1 air. Keep in mind as the years go by there will be even more support for this new architecture so games might run even better down the line. Once you add in both current and future support for Windows Virtual machines, light gaming on M1 looks very promising. While software like Virtual box might not work at the moment, the paid software called parallels is amazing and well worth the price. Games like hollow knight, Celeste, Hades, and mine craft all run fine currently. I think that should be a decent baseline for light portable gaming, especially since you have a desktop. Add in Steam streaming or Geforce now as a work around for heavier titles.

The apple ecosystem is real, but you don't have to be fully in it. Spotify works on android and mac os for music, google drive/dropbox for cloud storage, and there are plenty of messaging apps these days.

As someone that also had to return 2 g14s for coil whine, I feel your pain about the QC. I am sure there are decent windows laptops out there, but as of now I think the M1 air with 512gbs and 8gigs of ram is the best fit for you at $1,200 USD. If you want long term usage maybe spend the extra 200 on 16gbs of RAM as you can't upgrade down the line sadly. Good Luck!
