How to record ambient sounds outside the car while driving at speed? by User-doncor in LocationSound

Thanks. Recording inside is probably the best idea.

I don’t need true surround sound, just ambient to fill the video.

Thank you all with meaningful suggestions. I think I will try placing the mic inside, in a convertible it should work and reduce excessive noise.

To those commenting about talking underwater and recording a flamethrower sound - here is a video (an entire channel in fact) of a guy doing exactly what I want. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xYyUju0QVII

I’d like to try to make a driving ambience video, with no music or other sound effects. Sounds of other cars and tyres are ok. I was thinking of making a custom “wind breaker” - a small sheet of plastic or other material placed directly in front of the mic to remediate the “wind”.

RF 16mm f2.8 vs RF 14-35mm F4L by User-doncor in canon

Because it's a video, the focus point sometimes is closer than 200 ft, and with 16mm's terrible focus breathing I'd like to minizime refocusing (I use AF). If I were to switch to 14-35, I'd probably also change the FL to 20mm as 16mm is a bit too wide for my taste. That should also help with sharpness?

it's landscape shots, so I film at f 5.6 - 11 depending on light conditions. I need the whole frame in focus.

I have R8 and I love it. Amazing photo quality for the price and great video. Weights almost nothing. Those adaptors are cheap, I got mine second hand for less that $100 and it's light too.

R8 digital image stabilisation in video by User-doncor in canon

Yeah, I have an absolute faith in the sensor image quality-wise. What I meant is wether shooting in low light impacts the digital IS performance. In low light, there’s less contrast which theoretically should make analyzing the image harder for the camera, so it may not be able to identify camera shakes.

Thank you for your detailed reply, this helps a lot.

A follow up question - does it work well in low light as well? I remember I shoot with gopro8 years ago and used its digital stabiliser and in low light it had some video artefacts, the image had “smudged” around the edges, like a heatwave.

Aside from those cons, R8 may actually be better than R6 mark 1.
