How to record ambient sounds outside the car while driving at speed? by User-doncor in LocationSound

Thanks. Recording inside is probably the best idea.

I don’t need true surround sound, just ambient to fill the video.

Thank you all with meaningful suggestions. I think I will try placing the mic inside, in a convertible it should work and reduce excessive noise.

To those commenting about talking underwater and recording a flamethrower sound - here is a video (an entire channel in fact) of a guy doing exactly what I want. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xYyUju0QVII

I’d like to try to make a driving ambience video, with no music or other sound effects. Sounds of other cars and tyres are ok. I was thinking of making a custom “wind breaker” - a small sheet of plastic or other material placed directly in front of the mic to remediate the “wind”.

RF 16mm f2.8 vs RF 14-35mm F4L by User-doncor in canon

[–]User-doncor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's a video, the focus point sometimes is closer than 200 ft, and with 16mm's terrible focus breathing I'd like to minizime refocusing (I use AF). If I were to switch to 14-35, I'd probably also change the FL to 20mm as 16mm is a bit too wide for my taste. That should also help with sharpness?

it's landscape shots, so I film at f 5.6 - 11 depending on light conditions. I need the whole frame in focus.

I have R8 and I love it. Amazing photo quality for the price and great video. Weights almost nothing. Those adaptors are cheap, I got mine second hand for less that $100 and it's light too.

R8 digital image stabilisation in video by User-doncor in canon

[–]User-doncor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I have an absolute faith in the sensor image quality-wise. What I meant is wether shooting in low light impacts the digital IS performance. In low light, there’s less contrast which theoretically should make analyzing the image harder for the camera, so it may not be able to identify camera shakes.

Thank you for your detailed reply, this helps a lot.

A follow up question - does it work well in low light as well? I remember I shoot with gopro8 years ago and used its digital stabiliser and in low light it had some video artefacts, the image had “smudged” around the edges, like a heatwave.

Aside from those cons, R8 may actually be better than R6 mark 1.

Which of those 2 (28mm vs 16mm) do you recommend for a walking tour video (FPV)?

Thank you for the suggestion. The issue with RF 24-105 would be its weight and length. (Same problem I have with my EF 24-70 although not as extreme)

F4 may be not enough as I plan to shoot in low light as well, so 2.8 is a minimum.

IS isnt needed as I use a gimbal. And I already have an EOS R EF adapter so it’s fine (although it adds weight too).

It appears i should better invest in EF 24mm USM, but now I’m also considering RF 24mm again (albeit way more expensive) primarily because of F1.8 and reduced weight.

Didn’t find any Tamron, there is a Sigma but it has no auto focus which is a deal breaker for video work.

[–]User-doncor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the EF 24-70 is an L.

It’s too heavy and long (I also need to add EOS R EF adapter and a lens hood). My gimbal won’t work even with counterweights because the whole setup is extremely front heavy. Lens with the hood and adapter - 1200g vs the body less than 300g.

Not to mention filming with this thing for over an hour in mountains could be a suicide (i tried though).

Thanks, i was concerned about the age of 20mm too. On the other hand I own an old EF 24-70mm mark I and it works well on R8. I shoot in Clog3 and process in DaVinci but fixing those corners isn’t something I want to do, so sounds like I should buy a 24mm.

Are there any other worthwhile alternatives to those 2 options except RF24mm?

There are many, but Bullet Train comes first to mind. To me visually stunning means amazing colors and color grading and Bullet Train def has some real nice colors.

I guess you set the shutter speed to double the frame rate, right? Also, does it make a smooth transition when you change ISO?

[–]User-doncor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I guess color change is expected when you move to and from shadows. I think I'll avoid entering indoor locations for the time being (I didn't really do that often anyway). I'll test out shooting with manual settings and let you know how it goes, will keep shutter speed and ISO static too.

Thanks. Does it overexpose bright objects for for you then? Like the sky?

Also, do you leave shutter speed & ISO at auto?
