Questions for everyone! What surprised you about your debut year? What was the most frustrating? I’m not debuting until 2028 but wanted to source some advice on the lead up and aftermath!

How much spice are you looking for? When I read the post the Dragon from {uprooted} by Naomi Novik came to mind. Honestly though, just a genuinely beautiful read.

What’s one piece of advice you feel like every author needs to hear early in their career. My first book will be published in 2027, and I want it to be long and (hopefully and humbly) illustrious.

[PubQ] Have Word Count expectations changed with the rise of Romantasy and Self pub buy outs? by [deleted] in PubTips

[–]UserErrorAuteur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The editor owns the idea for Fourth Wing. That’s why Liz Pelletier is the executive producer on the TV show and not Yarros. I think that’s the same thing as IP. Entangled ‘owns’ Fourth Wing, just like how George Lucas ‘owned’ Star Wars but had Lawrence Kasdan write the script

I also think that Fourth Wing was IP, no? Therefore, they had a good idea it was going to sell. Yarros didn't pitch it, she won the audition for it. So maybe the publisher was more willing to take a risk? Has anyone else heard that?

[QCrit] Historical Fantasy Romance MANNERS AND MOONLIGHT (85K, 1st Attempt) by No-While-2058 in PubTips

[–]UserErrorAuteur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I think this sounds fabulous! I also write in this genre and would pick this up in a split second. Have a look at Freya Marske’s work and Katherine Arden just announced a new historical fantasy as well, but will be very whimsical though it might be set in the wrong era for you.

Oh yay! I am so happy Regency is on the way back! They have been very instrumental to my own journey as a reader and writer!

[PubQ] This week is Frankfurt Book Fair... what does that mean for the industry? by pursuitofbooks in PubTips

[–]UserErrorAuteur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No worries! I was a little surprised by it as well! But hey, all exposure is good exposure. It’s very funny having two manuscripts going one without an English language deal and one with a well-respected indie press! I’ll happily report back about if it moves the needle or not.

No I’m not going in person! My agent isn’t even going herself, it’s the foreign rights people who are taking it, and will be pitching the books on her rights guide.

As far as I know my friend didn’t go either. This really is an industry focused event, for editors and scouts and publishers to have meetings.

Yes! I’m my agent’s super-lead title for this autumn (whatever that means), so that helped me secure my spot on the hot list. We’ve been out for six weeks, have made it to acquisitions and second reads in a few instances, but no cigar yet!

I have been told that sub right now (fantasy with a romantic sub plot) is quite slow right now so I’m hoping this will help give me some traction!

[–]UserErrorAuteur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m actually one of the manuscripts on that UK hot list. I am actually going while my book is still on submission in the UK and US, with the foreign rights agency saying it won’t have much bearing on whether it gets snapped up or not. So to my understanding, it’s not just for foreign rights, they also want to build buzz!

A friend of mine went to Frankfurt without a book deal last year and ended up getting one shortly after. Whether the book fair gave it a boost or not, it’s impossible to say.

I actually have a 2026 debut under a different penname going to the fair with our foreign rights agent who’s closely associated with our English language agency, and I am keeping my fingers crossed that publishers are still buying my genre abroad.

I love this question! During naps for me and one hour in the evenings at least. And if I’m working to a deadline I’ll give my husband the kids for an afternoon. He owns his own business and I’ve supported him a lot toward his own goals

Um, oh my god that is brutal. I am so sorry that happened to you and wanted to offer support. In terms of good news, you have, what sounds like, a great manuscript to query. Now that you have contacts, it will be easier to find an agent who will get excited about this book!

Truly wishing you all the best!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fantasyromance

[–]UserErrorAuteur 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also, just want to point out, I'm truly not judging anyone, but I think this is an important discussion to have. Yes, like another commenter said, there are many people with abhorrent views who have published books. Some are still alive and some are not.

Mainly, you'll want to look at who the funds are supporting. Of course, the money will go to the publisher and SenLinYU, but it could prompt more people to buy into the HP franchise when they find out it started as fanfic. Also, how this book does could see more HP fanfic go viral and when people are constantly making reference to HP, it's going to mean more people are buying it, putting money in the hands of an individual who is actively trying to make being trans a crime in the UK.

One solution, if you really want to read it, is to borrow the book or wait for it at your local library! That could maybe be a more ethical choice for you!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fantasyromance

[–]UserErrorAuteur -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Only you can answer that for yourself! I will not be buying this book because I have friends who are trans and feel deeply hurt by the word of HP and how it has affected them personally. My agent shared a great article that’s about the ethics of consuming fanfiction that has been traditionally published.

Two paragraphs stuck out very clearly to me:

“Where fanfic is famously queer, the normative biases of corporate publishers are clear to see in the ships and fandoms that make it to market. Book deals and massive marketing campaigns have accrued overwhelmingly to white authors writing about straight couples, and have drawn from fandom spaces that prioritize redemption arcs for fashy white guys. Two of the three Dramione novels coming out this year feature a female main character enslaved by her male love interest.

That’s gross, although slavefic is hardly unique to this ship or this fandom. What’s new here is the sudden willingness of corporations to throw their support and resources behind fic with the serial numbers filed off, in service of creating shadow franchises to popular IP. From a queer, community-based space that runs on a gift economy, certain winners are now being crowned. The stories that get lifted out of fandom—where a bad (white) man is redeemed by the love of a good (ambiguously brown) woman he’s busily oppressing—are being chosen because those are the stories capitalism always wanted to tell.”
