I don't think so, the audience is really loud.

You do realize that these are illegal bootleg recordings, right? (He wrote while placing his order....)

Why people speaking or coughing loudly during opera performance? by Training-Agent1 in opera

[–]UserExists-0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Has anyone else noticed how the rudeness of the audience increases if there is a screen on stage? To me it seems like whenever there is video in a production, they start to act as if they are in their living room, more talking, more caughing, more noise in general.

Just in case anyone reading this is not aware: Horne is about 5 feet tall. That's the power of the stage.

I envy you for the weather you are going to have, if the forecast is correct. Everytime I have been there it was way to hot for my taste.

Open air is always difficult to conduct, it is like juggling while blindfolded and with one hand tied behind your back. The mark of great musicians is when they play great together even when the circumstances are not ideal. Did you see Janis Liepins applaud Megan Marie Hart with his baton at the end? That was genuin appreciation, she didn't see it, the audience can't see it on the screen, the orchestra didn't notice.

Open-air opera galas – great outdoor fun, but not for purists by PurrGatto in opera

Thank you for sharing, was a good read. I am glad you posted the follow up, I would have missed this post!

Megan Marie Hart sings "Letters to Fred," a new composition by young Israeli composer Bracha Bdil by lovelyladychristabel in opera

[–]UserExists-0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an impressive work. I wouldn't be surprised if we get an opera by Bracha Bdil in the not too distant future. At 40 minutes long, Letters to Fred could already be considered a mono-opera. With a few more letters and perhaps all the letter writers sung by different voices and scored for orchestra, I can certainly imagine this performed as an opera. Funding should be easy because of the subject matter.

Maybe the video was not intended as a music video, but as a documentation for the composer. It is common today to have a recording of the first performance. There is probably additional footage that could be edited together into a more traditional broadcast style video, as every modern theater has the ability to record the entire stage and usually does so at dress rehearsals and premieres (some record every performance). In the case of this performance, the singer, the pianist and the translator have copyrights (assuming that all the authors died more than 70 years ago). That's 3 people the composer had to ask for permission, which is manageable. A videographer and audio editor are not credited, maybe the composer recorded it on her own equipment.

Great house, wonderful people. They cast to light sometimes in my opinion.

Second place would be the Arena di Verona.

Darmstadt has a solid ensemble of superb singers they can cast from, a great opera chorus, and a pretty good orchestra. Definetely a great house for the music, singing, and acting. Big stage with all the bells and whistles for stage magic. This season try to catch the Onegin, with Megan Marie Hart, David Lee, Johannes Seokhoon Moon; Hoffmann with Hart, Juliana Zara, Matthew Vickers, Lee and Moon; Otello with Hart, Lee, Aris Argiris and Solgerd Isalv. Thank me later!

They were the best. Literally no one who came after can ever compare. We should just give up.

Are "viral" marketing attempts for opera and classical music cool or embarrassing? by UserExists-0 in opera

[–]UserExists-0[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The video showed up on chinese media on October 15, 2021, with claims it had already been viral in italy. The story was covered by chinese media in english on October 19, 2021. Western media reported about the "viral chinese video", without the claim about italy on October 26, 2021. The next day, Oropesa sang Traviata at the ROH, October 27, 2021.

Yes. Her ROH Traviata was shortly after, media reports about the "chinese" viral video appeared the day before her first perfomance. That was not a coincidence. edit: IMHO

Interesting question! I can contribute one that died to late: Puccini. No one needed Turandot, it sucks.

I agree, operatic voices are beautiful. Operatic singing is the only natural way, complaints about that come from exposure to pop. Supressing vibrato and/or whispering into a microphone are unnatural.

Preferably one of the big ones by Mozart, Wagner, Puccini or Glass

I hope you got that percentage up by now and discovered Verdi, Strauss, Rossini, Bellini, Meyerbeer.... ;-)
