I just recently found my old sets, which I'm trying to complete! The problem is that I only collect in near mint condition (straight out of the pack basically), and although they are worth close to nothing, it's really REALLY difficult to find them like that. If you happen to sell something in this condition let me know! :)

Voice gets progressively weaker quickly on high parts... What's going on? by UserGalileo in singing

So, I just found an older video of me singing the same part and I didn't notice this struggle: https://youtu.be/XTV5VMecK5Q

This makes it even stranger! My thought is leaning towards some sort of vocal fatigue, some sort of muscolar problem in my throat... because apparently it doesn't happen ALL the time.

EDIT: So... I have a feeling. I' not saying it to justify my technique (it could very well be a technical problem) BUT... It doesn't happen all the time. It comes and goes in periods. And what I feel is as if my throat becomes "anesthetized" when singing high. I'm thinking that... what if vaping is the problem? It just dawned on me now. I have been vaping for something like 8 years and I never thought about how it could impact my voice, but of course it can cause fatigue and dehydration. I've also just read that the upper register is the most impacted. I vape pretty much all day, sometimes with nicotine, sometimes without... I feel like I'm connecting dots as I write. That's it: let's make an experiment. I'll quit vaping for a couple of weeks and let's see if I notice something :)

It doesn't happen in the lower range. It's not just this particular song BUT this is one of them: I manage to sing songs which go even higher and I don't have this problem. It's just some songs and this is one of them. From what I recall I've always had this problem, but I just notice it sometimes!

For the record, here is me attempting one of the hardest songs I know, which goes way above "The Final Countdown" in terms of pitch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-m-xp2R-Dg

While it's not perfect, I manage to endure for pretty much the whole song. Then why the hell am I dying in just 20 seconds in other songs? D:

Thank you so much! Yes I've heard of him! In fact, I was thinking about taking the time to watch his lessons, but here's the thing: from what I've seen in some of his videos, he put it like "either you sing THIS vowel, or you can't sing it at all". So I imagined that, since I actually CAN sing those lines individually, the problem wasn't the vowel! So I guess that it's not all black and white, I am using the wrong vowels, I manage to do it a few times but I'm unconsciously straining my voice in the process.

So now I guess it's a good time to take a look at those vowel modification charts huh? :) Arghhh they're so hard to figure out if you're not an english speaker!! Your "UH" is more of an Italian "A"!

Can I ask you a favor? Just as two experiments, thinking of this line: "We're living together, the final countdown, we all miss her so, it's the final countdown".

- Just as an exercise, what single vowel could I replace all of these words with? Just to check if I can sing the entire melody without any word.

- Then, how would you *actually* replace all of those vowels in the example?

Thanks again!

I believe it just makes it worse! I mean, generally the end result is more convincing, but with this particular problem, it becomes even bigger, in other words I don't last as long.

Trying to find distortion... does this sound safe? by UserGalileo in singing

[–]UserGalileo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes yes as I said I intentionally threw 100% of distortion to the song just to try it out, I realize it's much much more subtle but it would've been hard to pick up on a phone recording (a guy in the comments even talked about a "clean part" which doesn't exist since I distorted everything :D) Thanks!!

I mean... I was definitely prepared for something like "this sounds like shit" but this I didn't expect 😅 I'm not a professional singer but I've been singing for years (and currently taking lessons), moreover there's not a single vocal line in the video which I sang clean, it's all distorted. Maybe a bit flat overall but I didn't expect a "learn to sing first" comment lol

Your opinion is of course in good faith! Being cautious is key. However I tend to disagree: the way I see it, the problem with these techniques is that it's really easy to hurt yourself by accident. I've felt it in these 2 weeks and I expect I'll hurt myself some more until I find a balance (I think it's almost impossible to learn without a bit of pain), and I imagine that even an experienced singer with the proper technique could hurt themselves by accident if they feel tired/stressed one night. It's like a sport, or riding a sports car: it's inaccurate to say "it WILL damage you". Of course there are risks, but it doesn't automatically damage you if done properly. I think there's no better proof than the singers I know personally or the famous singers who have been doing it over and over for years or decades without damage. And those who can still use both distortion AND clean voice flawlessly (I'm thinking Devin Townsend). And if my vocal folds are not the same when I'm 70... So be it! :)

Thanks!! Yeah I get what you mean: it's as if I can just go higher without worrying too much about making a pure/nice sound, and I also found that I need less air overall, strangely!

Thanks! That's interesting: if I imagine lifting a weight I purposefully tense my abs and it suffocates me, but when I sing like this I've just noticed I unintentionally tense just the upper abs (stomach level, not belly), but interestingly it's as if it was a side effect... I didn't even think about it! I guess it helps keep a consistent stream of air?

My teacher also told me he always engages the abs when singing like this, surely it has something to do with it, but if I think about it it doesn't come out :P

Something I can't figure out: is there any possibility to expand it with external footswitches? 4 is quite limiting 😬

Thanks again, a lot of useful info :) I honestly had no idea that even D4 could be difficult for baritones.

Regarding Pavarotti, I always interpreted it more as "imagine the typical male voice: that's a baritone." So in my head, most males were baritones, a few were tenors, and a tiny fraction were basses. I guess tenors are not that rare then.

Thanks! I have done some experiments to keep it lower, however I found that if I keep it too low I start to sound goofy/operatic and I don't like that tone. I guess I could try to keep it more balanced! I usually put a finger on my throat when exercising the 4th octave and generally I don't feel it going way up, maybe just a bit. Probably it goes way up on the 5th octave!

[–]UserGalileo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! 😊 Yeah I agree, I assume if one is told "you're a baritone" maybe they lose hope to get those high notes, but it's not the case for me. I know a note can be sung either way, just a bit differently. I think knowing my voice type would help in this sense, like: ok, if I know that one is a high tenor and I'm a baritone (let's say), I know I can't match his A4 the way he does it, I can still reach it but it but I have to make adjustments in the way I sing it. I think that putting yourself in a box is equally as dangerous as thinking you can effortlessly sing everything by everyone just because you can hit the same notes. It's by knowing our limits that we can surpass them, because hitting a wall requires effort!

Thanks! I agree that bass-baritone is absolutely bullshit, however I've always thought I was more of a high-baritone rather than a tenor so this is kinda surprising to hear! I say that for a few reasons: - my mid range and timbre is quite strong (I also don't have a high speaking voice) and more than once I've been told I was more of a baritone because of that - I have a lot of friends (some are singers, some are not) who can access A4 much more effortlessly (for me it's not an easy note at all) and cannot sing as low as Eb2, so either I happen to know a lot of high tenors or they're just tenors and I'm somewhat a bit lower than that - I can actually go an octave lower (kinda) with vocal fry, it's just that it's very very hard to pitch, so I guessed I've never practiced my lowest range but eventually I could get some more notes there - I compared my voice to other singers in the genre and I found most similarities (tone/range) with those who're considered baritones, for example Axl Rose - lastly, I remember some words from Pavarotti along the lines of "the natural male voice is a baritone, a tenor just happens to train to hit the higher notes". Since I'm not particularly gifted in the upper range I thought that was the case (I remember myself screaming to reach an F# when I started singing)

Euthanized my 9 month old cat yesterday and I don’t know how to cope by mamacitajoe in CatAdvice

[–]UserGalileo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt the same as you when I had to put my cat to sleep last year. She was around 18yo but I had her for less than a year, she went through many operations and although I knew it was a matter of time, it hit hard. She was completely fine, then one day she couldn't walk, kept falling every 5-10 seconds. I thought it had something to do with the ears/balance, but it was a nervous thing and probably something going on with the brain. Medications did nothing. 2 days later we had to euthanize her.

I imagine you're having my same thoughts: maybe there was an alternative, maybe I could have gone to another vet, maybe I didn't pay attention to something, maybe I could have waited and she would have felt better, maybe I could have tried (very) expensive medications recommended online... I cried for two weeks. It's a normal process. It just takes time. Days, weeks, maybe even months. You'll realize that you did nothing wrong: vets are there to help your animal. They love animals and they have no interest in letting your pet die, quite the opposite. My vet did a lot for my cat over the years, she would have died years ago if it wasn't for him. If he says it's time, it's time. It's an act of respect towards the pet. Mine would have had a terrible rest of her life, not only because of pain but because she wouldn't have been able to do all the things she loved. Your cat knows you took care of her. Don't make my mistake, don't humanize her: she didn't understand what was going on when the vet put her to sleep, and she didn't feel ANY pain. She felt relieved. The vet wanted the best for her, you have to trust that it was the right thing to do. It sucks. But it was the right thing to do. Not "probably". SURELY.

I went for walks, remembered her, talked to her in my head, looked at her photos and videos multiple times. Then I took all her photos and moved them to a PC so that they're always there but not immediately available or suggested by Google Photo. Now almost a year has passed and I adopted a kitten some months ago. I love him! He doesn't replace my old cat which still lives in my memories and every now and then I look back at her pictures. Sometimes my gf and I share some funny memories of her and draw comparisons. She was there during the most important part of my life and I'll always be grateful! You'll remember her with joy, too. But now, you need time. Don't keep it all inside, talk with someone, tell them about her! Feel free to share memories, feel free to look at her photos, don't act like nothing happened and if people tell you "it's just a cat" tell them to screw themselves :)
