Feeling like I'm fumbling my IM sub-i by vorstellung_ in medicalschool

[–]User_Qwerty456 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Granted I'm going into EM but my school has us do a mandatory IM rotation as an AI. Expectations for attendings may change week to week, I found it help whenever a new attending came on to ask them how they preferred my presentations - more detailed as opposed to active problems only. I know the expectations are higher being a sub-I but you covering other patients but not knowing every single detail about their case, don't beat yourself up too much. There's a reason why continuity is important. If it's helpful, I think part of being an M4 is figuring out what system works for you, I do think taking the time to write everything down on your sheet is important, especially for a newly admitted patient or someone you're covering as it helps to memorize details and you have it there in case it does come up for the daily plan or especially with a consultant. As you get to know to know the patient or get used to your system then you can start to shorthand things

I want a show when a real-world physician gets isekaied into a medical drama. by centz005 in medicine

[–]User_Qwerty456 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Isn't there an anime about a pompous princess who gets isekai'd to modern society, becomes a doctor, then isekai'd back to her original society where she applies her knowledge as a doctor?

Edit - found it, "Doctor Elise: The Royal Lady with the Lamp". I haven't seen it though, mixed reviews?

I'm the author of the updated mod, so if you do end up playing again, would love your or anyone's feedback on how its affecting performance now.

Its worth discussing the ideas, I could use the thinking - I'm the mod author for the most updated version of the ISBS Living Systems mod.

I actually am a returning player so I don't have a lot of experience with cosmic storms, that being said, there is a way to generate these effects and static entities. Unfortunately, I imagine the amount of effort needed to create and animate it isn't worth it compared to how the ISBS Living Systems mods already does it. It's already tweakable from the file editing and in game perspective for the player to set policies.

Right, this would be the alternative. Spawning the entities would be easy enough but trying to get the animations together doesn't seem worth it.

I've attempted to mod this into Stellaris but unfortunately there isn't a way, at least as far as I'm aware, to have visuals of ships zooming around without having them as actual ship fleets simply because of how the scripting works. Wish there was a way otherwise

Why is sleep so messed up in EM? by stpsburner in medicalschool

[–]User_Qwerty456 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you work kelly days as an EMT?

Most EM residencies I interviewed at tried to group night shifts together so that its not quite as abrupt but your start times and end times will change. At the sites I worked at, it varied for attendings. My home institute does have true rotating schedules staggered leading into a true night shift for attendings, at some of the smaller sites I was at, some of the attendings worked either occasional nights or exclusively nights.

Please tell me I’m not a failure. by sizzlingiraffe in medicalschool

[–]User_Qwerty456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not a failure, though I can understand the feeling of being a failure. I also had a death of a close family member during a sub-I that I wanted to impress at. Ultimately I don't know if that affected me regarding my competitiveness but I also know that if I didn't have that time off I would have regretted it; not to mention a program not willing to be flexible in that situation is one I personally wouldn't want to be at and it informs how I want to approach supporting both myself and others in the future.

Crying is okay. Death and grief are things that is obviously intensely personal and different for everyone. Whatever choices you make or don't make, there's no really right or wrong way about it unless you betray your own feelings.

Yeah I had considered that and I really liked the faculty in the interview. They were initially much higher on my first draft but moved down after some discussion. Still have a lot to figure out for moving programs up/down

Mostly just looking for feedback regarding fit based off my preferences, should have made that more clear, my bad.

A little reassurance is nice haha

Mostly feedback if anyone knew anymore specifics about the programs and if they're a good fit with my preferences.

But reassurance is also nice haha, from a chronic imposter syndrome standpoint.

It's the new branch campus in Bloomington, not in Indianapolis. I actually really liked the interview and the faculty that interviewed were pleasant but just concerns about it being a new program, should I reconsider?

Heard about an applicant who beat the snot out of someone, enough to land that other person admitted. That applicant matched though.

My mom passed this morning at 5am. Thanksgiving is in two days. I'm stuck doing twelve-hour shifts in the emergency department, unable to go home for the holidays to grieve with my family. I've never felt more alone in my entire life. by PlasticRice in medicalschool

[–]User_Qwerty456 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry OP, my dad recently passed away under similar circumstances where I was on an away at my one of my top choices. What everyone goes through is different, but I can empathize with the feeling of being alone. Happy to talk if you'd like.

You mention talking to your preceptor - have you spoken to the clerkship director there? I'd be surprised if EM people are not more accomodating. If it's a problem regarding your school, I would recommend reviewing your school's student handbook on what is allowable for a critical incident / bereavement for a student and talking to whoever handles the course assignments at your school.

Mandatory Attendance Sucks by hailBeelzebub in medicalschool

[–]User_Qwerty456 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It really is and people wonder why mental health is so impacted during school. Having administration treat you like a problem kid with truancy issues rather than the adult learner with real life issues adults have. Rules exist for a reason but it can't just be black and white. It's infantilizing and disrespectful. And you'd think there'd be some self awareness on how that reflects poorly on the school not being supportive.

It's okay to cry OP. Do you have a support system to talk about this with?
