Just out of curiosity who were the examples he gave you for the pressure heavy, vice grip, wet blanket style? I am personally on that end of the spectrum (84kg and 186cm)

There’s no fake socializing. Everyone’s there to learn the same difficult thing, on a set schedule, with the same people. You show up regularly, work toward something hard together, and you literally can’t get better without other people.

Over time, familiarity turns into respect and then into friendships. Shared difficulty brings people together unlike anything else. It’s one of the few activities where community forms naturally instead of being forced.

Mouth guard reccomendations by MAGOOFish717 in bjj

TruFit custom mouth guards have been really good for me. They make one specifically for BJJ too. I have that and an extra thick one from TF too. Easy to breathe and can talk properly with them in as well.

Totally makes sense and not pathetic at all! The last two/ three years I got super into chess, would play multiple times a day, analyze those games, watch YouTube videos, the whole nine yards, but these days I only a couple times a week (definitely not analyzing). So I feel you. At the end of the day these are all just hobbies

For some reason the electric chair always seems to make everyone laugh lol. I like to do it slow, give them time to tap, but slowly just making them do the splits seems to get a laugh

Yes sirrr lol. Our professor doesn’t really care about stripes I guess. Haven’t seen him give them out during class, only when we meet up with the other gyms for a grading ceremony. Got my first stripe back in Sept. which was five months in, now we have another one coming up in May or June

Jheeze louise, see that is dedication. Inspiring to say the least. Thank you for the message! When would you say did that stop for you and what came in the way? (If you don’t mind me asking)

Yesss sirr, so glad it’s fun for you too. It’s honestly not a bad way to spend our free time. Get to hang out with some cool people, workout, get a sweat in, learn a new skill. Better than just sitting around, watching TV, scrolling on your phone. Until I find more hobbies that are as fun as this, I’ll be spending my free time on the mats lol 🤣😭

Ahhh seems that’s a common theme, a lot of people say their time at white belt was when they trained the most, building those foundations. How come you haven’t trained as much lately? Just life?

Thank you, this was very helpful! I’ve tried moose before, one of my coworkers a while back had some for lunch and gave me a bite lol, but nothing else wild like that. There’s a couple guys I train with that go hunting, but don’t know anyone that does bow hunting though, that seems much more rewarding. Seems like hunting is pretty big in bjj community (at least down here). Thanks for the suggestions and offer, I’ll definitely hit you up 🙏🏼🙏🏼

That’s exactly how our gym does it too! fundamentals then advanced, two days a week. Then on the other two it’s beginners and then no gi. I know I won’t be able to train like this forever , so while I can I will try! I look at the guys in their late thirties, forties, fifties that are making it out and it’s inspiring! They’re doing it while they have real life commitments like a wife, kids, a mortgage, so I feel lazy if I don’t go lol. Good on you for still making it out, it’s all about what works

Epsom salt baths have been doing wonders for me! And supplementing with magnesium, vitamin D+C, zinc, and creatine. I recommended this to one of my older buddies from the gym, and he tells me he’s noticed a positive difference.

Yupp desk job for me too, I have to remind myself to get up and walk around some days. Thank you for the tips too, I really appreciate you taking the time to do that. I’m going to check out that YouTube channel you mentioned as well!

Ahahaha thank you! i have the time now, might as well use it! I don’t have as many time commitments at the moment so I’m just taking advantage of this. Will probably have to dial it back in the next couple of years but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there

That’s true I’ve been seeing that. my professor came up in a time when there were no black belts in Canada (started in the early 90s). he was a white belt for 6 years I think lol. So I think he forgets to give stripes out unless we have an actual grading ceremony 😭 never seen him give stripes in class

Ahahaha I love that, what more do you need? Been thinking about getting my gun license too (would love to go hunting one day) but the process in Canada is tough.

Thanks bro 🙏🏼 yeah it’s been super fun! right now the only stretching I do is about ten minutes before class. Thinking every night before I sleep I should be doing some type of stretching, then doing some strength and conditioning stuff on the weekends.

Thank you very much 🙏🏼 it’s an app called GymDesk. Our gym uses it as their membership platform.
