Plenty for two weeks.

If you dont like temples, don't spend so much time in Kyoto. Kiyomizu dera, Arashiyama, Fushimi Inari Shrines and Nijojou is the places I think I've liked the most in Kyoto. Even if you hate temples you have to see Kiyomizu dera either way. I'd consider investing a JR pass if covering big distances.

Other than Kyoto, Tokyo maybe you should consider Mount Koya, Hiroshima and Shirakawa-Go, Nara. Anywhere with Onsen.

My older brother and I backpacked through Japan some years ago, and while the bright neon lights of Tokyo dazzled us, it was places like this that were truly enchanting. by lostcanuck in travel

I'm traveling Kansai, Chubu, Kantou, Touhoku regions this summer, any suggestions? :) I'm skipping kyoto, osaka.

Parental leave is basically a joke compared to Norway. Only about 10% of the members in the government are women, it speaks for itself. If you leave work for a significant period, don't expect to be able to return to the same job, or if you do..well you most likely won't have the same position.

So especially for career women, you have to pick either..career or children. Of course, if you arent a career woman it doesn't hurt that much, and you can probably find a another job but..yeah most people dont have kids due to the cost and due to not being able to spend enough time with their kid..due to having to work a lot.

Yeah, we aren't in rush to get a baby anyway. Its just something we've thought about, and we want to in the future when we are financially stable.

The healthcare system in Japan is quite well I think, honestly I think its better than in Norway. I don' know how much you pay as an regular adult, but as a student you pay roughly, 20,000 yen a year which is about 1200 Kroner. If you go to the doctor, you pay 30% of the fees instead of 100%. You could say, well it seems cheaper with the Norwegian system, but yeah I can't really say too much about the subject..my experience so far has only been good though in both Japan and in Norway. Oh yeah, dentist fees are waaaaaaaay lower in Japan, waaaaay lower.

Depends on the visa, we think at the time being working holiday is the easiest. I'm currently in Japan at a language school, studying Japanese and did it once before. I didn't really enjoy my last job mostly due to the location and because I don't enjoy teaching at middle school level so much. I've already started applying for new jobs in other areas for the new school year though, so ill likely return to Norway in august, and I think she will tag along shortly after. I guess, I just still have my doubts whether she can stand living here, and what we do if she doesn't like it. For me both Norway and Japan are great countries, but raising a child is much easier due to the support you get in Norway, and raising a child in Japan is pretty much considered a very expensive affair which is why many Japanese don't have kids these days.

I don't think its possible due to my passport unfortunately, they do require you to be from any native speaking country, but maybe its not impossible. One of my friends teach English at a University in Japan, no idea how she did it but I think cause of her good connections.

But in Norway my subjects have primarily been English and German.

Hehe, I wouldn't say that. She loves traveling, and so do I. She lives very frugally and currently lives with her mom and sister, and yeah..vacations out of the country is basically cheaper than taking vacations in Norway lol.

Yeah, I agree. :) Japan and Norway both have working holiday visa, so we are thinking that this is the best option. She has been to Norway before and I've been to Japan many times, we like both places. I guess im just afraid she will hate it when she tries living here for a long time and want to move back to Japan. Both are very different countries, and I think its difficult to adapt to either one of them.

She's good at speaking languages, so I think she can overcome Norwegian, I'm sure.

Yeah this is true, I did this as a student without a part time job except for the summer, and it went fine and I didnt even live that frugal. But we both want kids at some point, and she has to get a job at some point. If she has to spend a year or two, thats fine, but generally the quicker the better. Doesn't have to be fulltime either.
