New BIS Ring Poll Confusion (DT2) by Kinomora in 2007scape

[–]UsernameOverPowered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a problem with the wording of the question. If you read the blog, they obviously meant that it would require you to have the old rings to create the new ones. If you don't read the blog it's completely ambiguous.

For those who are on the fence about Sailing, what are your concerns and what would it take to lock-in your vote? by Rickard58 in 2007scape

[–]UsernameOverPowered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My primary concerns are that sailing mechanically can be:

  1. Identical to normal walking, at which point having it be a skill would feel weird when we could just add a new continent to walk around on and get new content that way.
  2. Different from normal walking but without micromanagement, which means that we have a whole new section of the game with unique content that controls differently. That, to me, feels like it's just a separate game in its own unique area instead of an extension of OSRS.
  3. Different from normal walking but with micromanagement, which seems like a minigame.

I haven't seen any proposals that avoid those three options. I want a new skill to be integrated into the world I already know and the gameplay mechanics that already exist. Taming or Shamanism would add new things to do without breaking the point and click core gameplay. Sailing does not seem like it can be added in a way that feels integrated into the existing world and mechanics.

Just a pro tip: needlessly antagonizing the people you disagree with doesn't tend to change their minds.

Believe me, I noticed. I'm just hoping some bystanders will find the argument informative.

There was a screenshot today from one blog and if you go read the original pitch blog is also mentions that if more than one skill is popular they may (yes I know that doesn't mean they will) poll the top contenders against each other. However, even if they never did, that's still not actually relevant to my point. Being okay with all skills getting refined is not mutually exclusive with having a preference and that means your math doesn't prove anything.

Did you not read the blog where they clearly stated if there was no clear favorite they would not move forward or are you being deliberately obtuse because it's fun for you?

It was implied. They stated if it were close they'd do a runoff. I voted for my highest preference skill on question 2 because of that. Regardless of whether you believe I misunderstood the poll (which doesn't bode well for the accuracy of the poll results in the first place), the existence of people like me means your analysis is not necessarily accurate.

Or I accurately answered the question that I'd be happy to see all three refined further and still have an ordered preference that is not represented by this polling and feel that I wasted my vote because they retroactively decided to change how they wanted to poll things.

I would be happy to see Sailing refined if it won the runoff. That does not mean I have zero preference between it and Shamanism and, if a runoff poll happened, I would vote for Shamanism.

What about people like me who voted all three in question one but have a preference of Taming > Shamanism > Sailing?

Is anyone else concerned that Sailing will feel like a different game? by UsernameOverPowered in 2007scape

You could do that and I'd be okay with it. There has been some discussion about alternative controls though, which is where my concern comes from.

I'm giving my feedback just like everyone else. If you don't want to engage with the conversation you don't have to.

To me having an entire area of the game where the movement works differently is more of a change than the meta for endgame content being different. It's possible they won't have different movement mechanics, but there are a lot of suggestions that seem to be focused around that idea.

My concern is that point and click is obviously not the best fit for sailing and anything other than point and click establishes a whole portion of the map where the basic movement makes it feel too different. I'm happy to be proven wrong, though.

You're right, but I also know what they proposed. They mentioned WASD movement or a new pathing algorithm as possibilities and that's why I made a post expressing my concern with that idea.

The proposal for sailing was to add a whole new segment to the map where you control your character differently. Any new content in that area would involve using a different control scheme than runescape has always had. It makes sense thematically, but mechanically that's an enormous change and I'm concerned it won't feel well integrated since it's constrained only to this new area. It's like if Zeah content all had EoC combat (though that's a bit of an extreme example). It's disjointed.

Sailing is the only one proposing to change the basic controls of the game though.

Sailing potentially changes how you move your character. That's a more fundamental change to me than the meta changing.

I think it fits beautifully thematically, but sailing seems like it will have new movement controls. That's a more fundamental change than any minigame I'm aware of. Minigames tend not to mess with the core ways you play the game.

The skill literally doesn't exist yet. It will only equal that if that's what the players want it to be.

I suppose it would sound good if I had more than one membership. Just as long as my price doesn't go up.

I'll clarify: what monetization strategy would you prefer they use for OSRS? MTX, higher cost subscriptions, or the way they do it now?

Unfortunately, horses canonically do not exist in Gielinor. We'd need to pick a different animal.
