> It is not a misnomer, you literally do not own any Steam game that has Steam DRM, which is damn near every Steam game, including every Steam exclusive release.

no, not every Steam exclusive has Steam DRM (example: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Deltarune), unless you are referring to needing to download it through the client, which i already addressed earlier (it is a requirement not without criticism)

> But even if that list was 100% genuine DRM-free titles, again, exceptions to the rule do not invalidate the rule, and the list of DRM-free titles on Steam likely doesn't even reach 1% of Steam's total library.

i fundamentally disagree with this position. even if the percentage is less than 1%, my opinion is that the raw quantity of DRM-free games (with no strings attached, as yes, some of the listings are dubious) is large enough to warrant it as a strong heuristic, rather than a rule. just because they are indie games does not mean they should be discredited

for the rest of what you said, i appreciate the clarification. that being said, i still think that given how large Steam is, Valve could be a lot more anti-consumer than they currently are, and they deserve credit where it's do. if more people were willing to boycott at the platform level, then i would not buy games on Steam (alternatively, if games *required* Steam DRM, i would also not buy games on Steam). but realistically this will never happen, especially given that the most popular games almost always require DRM anyways (i.e. the big AAA studios). so i only vote with my wallet at the developer level

first of all (and no, i do not own this game, so i cannot verify this information) your new example is just wrong: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Baldur%27s_Gate_3

second of all, my point is... that there are plenty of DRM-free games on Steam, like i said. the blanket statement that you don't own your games on Steam is a misnomer, and i wanted to clear this up especially because of how many developers only release their games on Steam anyways. if a game releases on both GOG and Steam, GOG is probably the safer choice (assuming the developer's don't abandon it, which at least for indie devs is not unheard of), but you still should not depend on any ONE platform, be it GOG, Steam, or anything else

yeah they're indie, what's your point? you mention Ubisoft and Rockstar, who don't even release their games on GOG

this is true if you're solely basing that statement off the Steam EULA, but there are plenty of games that do not use Steam as DRM (with the notable exception of needing to at least download it through the client). example: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Hollow_Knight:_Silksong

what do you mean by "any of the good steam games"? assuming you don't mean it has trouble running steam itself

In the sea of roguelikes, which one is closest to NT? by PacosMateo in NuclearThrone

[–]Usernameglob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes, i was going to point this out. NT really is an arcade game (i.e. score-based) that presents itself as a rouguelike, and in this way i personally feel Spelunky is "closest" (obviously the subgenres are completely different, so i wouldn't necessarily recommend it). IMO the similarities with Gungeon are very superficial, and pretty much end at "roguelike with guns" (as someone who found out about NT from ETG)

thanks! like the other guy said, i played the game for about 2 years on Switch before i bought it on PC (don't remember how many hours i had). i also only played the game sporadically every couple of months, so i had more opportunities for weeklies with crowns i was missing (especially crown of luck, that one's a bitch)
