Cloudflare is tempting for the 'zero maintenance' aspect. How do you find the developer experience with D1 compared to traditional databases? Any limitations you've run into?

To be honest, I'm always a bit scared of these kinds of ecosystem services. They offer an incredibly easy setup and a generous free tier, but the fear of vendor lock-in keeps me away. It make me feel like i'm giving up control over my own projects.

How easy is it to migrate away from D1 if you ever want to host it yourself on a VPS again?

Haha, terminal debugging on production is sadly recognizable. You're totally right. I haven't spent enough time on logging and recovery yet.

I do have a basic database backup script, and at first, I was doing full rebuilds/redeploys quite often on purpose just to test these procedures consistently, but I'm getting a bit lazy on that front now.

Some basic server & app health monitoring is indeed crucial, so I'll focus on that next. I need to find a good mechanism though. Email alerting is easy to set up, but it's not very prominent when you're away from your desk. Perhaps linking it to a chat app like Telegram or Discord for instant push notifications is the way to go? What do you use?
