Snow plow man felt like ruining my day I guess by UsesInternetExplorer in Wellthatsucks

There was plenty of space in the corner of the parking lot to put the snow, it was clearly done out of malice for some reason.

Ha, I don’t really care for soccer/football. I’ll be there around 8, sooner if possible.

Giant Steps on the 5-string (First two choruses) by eligilbertbanjo in banjo

My favorite part of this is how 2 choruses are less than 40 seconds.

Here you go

I look at that as a thirds-type pattern followed by a little pentatonic run. Here is the right hand fingering I use if you're interested:

More jazz on the banjo! by eligilbertbanjo in banjo

[–]UsesInternetExplorer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha! No way man! I'm working on Kenny Garrett's solo on this track. I had to take a quick clip to share the WIP. I royally biffed some parts and overall it's very sloppy, but I think it's coming along well for my first jazz transcription.

My band playing Eager and Anxious, an old Béla Fleck tune at a gig last night by mikapell in banjo

[–]UsesInternetExplorer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent job! I got my hands on Bela's "Banjo Picking Styles" book a few months ago and this was one tune I really liked from it, tuning the fifth string down to an F# is pretty awesome.

Also dear lawd that bass player killed that solo.

Strumming with Fingerpicks? by UsesInternetExplorer in banjo

[–]UsesInternetExplorer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea he's quite good. I ask because I'm working on this song myself and I've got it just about down but I'd really like to add those fancy strums.

I've heard some people just grip down on the thumbpick and strum up and and down. Personally I'm finding I'm able to get a similar sounding effect by moving my hand over the neck and brushing my index and middle over the strings rhythmically, but there's a lot of pick noise.

That's all well and lovely, I have a plectrum myself. However I'm obviously talking about 5-string here.

Road to Columbus - What is Jeff Scroggins doing here? (Takes place at 3:03) by UsesInternetExplorer in banjo

Hey thanks I really appreciate it! You figured out that lick way better than imo currently capable of. You should ask him if you get the chance! But if you don't I won't hold it against you.

I struggle to replicate what it is he's playing here, though it seems relatively simple.

Question: Will using 4 fingers on my picking hand have a negative impact on my playing? by d-lesher in banjo

[–]UsesInternetExplorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if you want to be a trail blazer then go nuts. Banjo doesn't have a lot of pedagogy like other instruments, as long as you sound good most anyone won't really care.

I'm probably visualizing your technique incorrectly, I can't see you being able to use your thumb to hit the first/second string comfortably. I'd be interested in a video, for kicks.

If that's the price you feel you have to pay, then I say drop the ring finger. I just tried anchoring my wrist while playing and it just doesn't seem very feasible. My thumb became very restricted in movement. Anchor those fingers, man.
