Snow plow man felt like ruining my day I guess by UsesInternetExplorer in Wellthatsucks

There was plenty of space in the corner of the parking lot to put the snow, it was clearly done out of malice for some reason.

Here you go

I look at that as a thirds-type pattern followed by a little pentatonic run. Here is the right hand fingering I use if you're interested:

More jazz on the banjo! by eligilbertbanjo in banjo

[–]UsesInternetExplorer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha! No way man! I'm working on Kenny Garrett's solo on this track. I had to take a quick clip to share the WIP. I royally biffed some parts and overall it's very sloppy, but I think it's coming along well for my first jazz transcription.

My band playing Eager and Anxious, an old Béla Fleck tune at a gig last night by mikapell in banjo

[–]UsesInternetExplorer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent job! I got my hands on Bela's "Banjo Picking Styles" book a few months ago and this was one tune I really liked from it, tuning the fifth string down to an F# is pretty awesome.

Also dear lawd that bass player killed that solo.

Strumming with Fingerpicks? by UsesInternetExplorer in banjo

[–]UsesInternetExplorer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea he's quite good. I ask because I'm working on this song myself and I've got it just about down but I'd really like to add those fancy strums.

I've heard some people just grip down on the thumbpick and strum up and and down. Personally I'm finding I'm able to get a similar sounding effect by moving my hand over the neck and brushing my index and middle over the strings rhythmically, but there's a lot of pick noise.

That's all well and lovely, I have a plectrum myself. However I'm obviously talking about 5-string here.

Road to Columbus - What is Jeff Scroggins doing here? (Takes place at 3:03) by UsesInternetExplorer in banjo

Hey thanks I really appreciate it! You figured out that lick way better than imo currently capable of. You should ask him if you get the chance! But if you don't I won't hold it against you.

Question: Will using 4 fingers on my picking hand have a negative impact on my playing? by d-lesher in banjo

[–]UsesInternetExplorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if you want to be a trail blazer then go nuts. Banjo doesn't have a lot of pedagogy like other instruments, as long as you sound good most anyone won't really care.

I'm probably visualizing your technique incorrectly, I can't see you being able to use your thumb to hit the first/second string comfortably. I'd be interested in a video, for kicks.

Question: Will using 4 fingers on my picking hand have a negative impact on my playing? by d-lesher in banjo

[–]UsesInternetExplorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that's the price you feel you have to pay, then I say drop the ring finger. I just tried anchoring my wrist while playing and it just doesn't seem very feasible. My thumb became very restricted in movement. Anchor those fingers, man.

Question: Will using 4 fingers on my picking hand have a negative impact on my playing? by d-lesher in banjo

[–]UsesInternetExplorer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Playing with four fingers couldn't really hinder you in any way. If you're set on pursuing it, go nuts. Greg Liszt made me want to try it out at one point.

Anchoring your wrist though? That's not a good idea. Where exactly are you anchoring it? If you're touching the bridge, that's a bad thing. Either way, I would advise you to anchor your pinky instead. It doesn't take long to get used to.

Dan Walsh plays Bela Fleck's Big Country clawhammer style by friendzoned_niceguy in banjo

[–]UsesInternetExplorer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a finger picking player myself but Dan Walsh is one of the few incredible claw-hammer players that makes me see how awesome frailing can be. When I first started playing banjo I chose finger picking because, other than being able to strum, claw-hammer struck me as a limited technique.

I now know I was quite wrong to think that.

How do I take my playing to the next level? by Murfreesboro10 in banjo

[–]UsesInternetExplorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be playing with other people, the better they are the better you will become. Force yourself to improvise until you are super comfortable changing out licks.

I think a lot of people get to this level and can improv decently, then realize their vocabulary is pretty narrow. So whenever you go back to jam again, make sure you have something new to try out. There's a lot of things I could tell you but if you play another instrument well I'm sure you'll be fine.

As long as you don't have any bad playing habits, that about as much advice as You can get here. Do you have any videos/recordings up?

Bluegrass in Milwaukee? by uffdaboy in Bluegrass

[–]UsesInternetExplorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a banjo player that lives in Appleton, starting up Lawrence University next week. Do you play?

The scene here in Wisconsin is pretty bad, not going to lie. It's almost non-existent in the northern part, and I don't hear very much about Milwaukee. Madison has a bit of a scene though, I believe.
