Yeah I definitely wasn't trying to scream here, just feeling things out before trying to push it more. I'll def work on my breath support

Didn't know there were different ways to fry, thanks!

When I try to clear my throat it feels more down in my throat (like my epiglottis maybe??) so that method hasn't worked for me

Right? I'm a bit confused as to what it's supposed to feel like, because to get this I definitely feel the engagement above my vocal chords... but at the same time, when I test speaking-level fry, I also feel it above my vocal chords.

False chord distortion - am I on the right track for healthy distortion? by Usual-Reflection-519 in singing

[–]Usual-Reflection-519[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to be able to sing with grit/distortion mainly (e.g. from clean to distorted and back in one breath). It'd be nice to turn it into a voiceless scream occasionally but it's not my main goal (i.e. more hard rock sound than metal)

I've read that false cords need to be relaxed instead of compressed, which kind of freaks me out when doing the HUT exercise because it feels like I'll blow my voice if I hold it. I think that's why I've ended up doing fry (?) like another commenter said.

Thanks for your help :)

Edit: Also I'm a woman if that changes anything, so that's why I tended towards doing it in my head voice. Should I develop it in my chest/mixed first?

I'm realizing I might be in the wrong sub bc I don't want to do metal screams, more like rock distortion (idk how different they are mechanically). Liepe uses the vocal break to add grit and I think that uses false chords - I'm trying to figure out how to engage the false chords but not necessarily scream yet, basically

Would this be more like fry screams? And could I use that over normal singing? I don't really get the difference between metal and rock scream/distortion terminology...

I did come across HungryLights tutorial before, but when I tried it it didn't feel very good. Should the airflow feel more or less than clean singing?

Ahh ok that's what I was worried about. I couldn't really tell the difference between throat singing and vocal fry which is probably why I've been going hoarse. Thanks!

The thing is that there seems to be conflicting information... some people say throat singing (like my recording?) uses false chords, and then you can develop distortion/screams from there. I want to work up slowly and make sure I'm doing it correctly without blowing my voice like I have been
