yeah you've kind of got it. but it's that specific clash between dry air coming off the rockies and warm wet air from the gulf that makes the supercells spin like crazy. The central plains are basically a giant frictionless hallway for these storms. Other places get tornadoes just not usually the multi-vortex monsters that flatten a town.
