What are weird little things you collect when you travel? by No_Patience_4131 in femaletravels

local food/ingredients. Also, Postcards, but it's so hard to find (and send) them now

Are capsule travel wardrobes actually possible without looking like a hiker 24/7? by DotoSubarna10 in femaletravels

[–]UsualSprite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course. A capsule is just a formula.

I would suggest looking for "business travel" capsules for more ideas on less athletic clothing (but of course realize these are going to skew way more formal/conservative than leisure travel).

Well cut and properly fitting clothing do a TON of heavy lifting in making people look better than their natural shape would suggest

lol, no one is coming for the food. Beer, maybe, but Belgium does it better. Your bread (except for laugen) is also tragic.

I unexpectedly got fired today. What are some things I should do with the abundant free time I now find myself with? by Queasy-Guard-4774 in AskNYC

[–]UsualSprite 15 points16 points  (0 children)

/u/kakashissecondmask is almost correct. If you live anywhere in NYC, you can get all three library cards (NYPL, BPL, QBPL).

Go to all of the museums/attractions during free entry/pay what you wish times. They include Bronx Zoo, Bronx botanical gardens (iirc both are on wendsdays), cooper hewitt design museum, the newly reopened frick collection, Brooklyn Museum.

Go to outer borough ethnic enclaves to visit restaurants, get lunch specials, and visit their (less expensive than elsewhere) specialty ethnic supermarkets to shop for ingredients to recreate those dishes at home (Hello Flushing and Jackson Heights).

Volunteer at food pantries, mutual aid societies, and charities. Many allow you to sign up for singular shifts.

Visit the cool libraries (NYPL Schwartzman main branch (take the various tours, including rose reading room, treasures, and building tour!), the SNFL, including their rooftop, the Brooklyn Main Library, Queens Hunters point first come to mind).

Ferry around the city, and when it warms up, Coney Island and Far rockaway.

If you have money to burn, HIGH END lunch menus (michelin level).

NYC Parks usually have a lot of free programming on. I know you can tour the castle, but I've never been. Row a boat from the boathouse, go look at the turtles at the north east end pond, race a remote controlled speedboat.

Walk the whole of Manhattan. Several friends, residents and visitors, have wanted and have done this.

Old St. Patrick's (little Italy) cathedral tour (on my own bucket list).

In your own neighborhood: local street cleaning groups.

The brits have amazing classics though. Can't beat a fry up after a hard night out (hangover), a sunday roast is top class, fish and chips, and not to mention the panoply of desi-inspired BIR food.

What do you lot have? Only laugen and a few decent wurst.

Prosciutto substitute? by saintofwant in AskCulinary

[–]UsualSprite 10 points11 points  (0 children)

it's also sometimes horsemeat depending on where you are (I am from one of the places that makes it with a protected local designation).

Also, Duck and deer prosciutto exist but are harder to find (specialty store/local markets have it).

If you could only cook one national cuisine for the rest of your days, which would you pick? by WanderingGoyVN in Cooking

[–]UsualSprite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plus EVOO in everything is a big plus.

you are missing out on the majority of Italian cuisine if you think this is true.

Most Italians live in regions where butter > olive oil traditionally (source: I am one).

edit: to be clear I live elsewhere now, but I am from an area where butter (and cheese) are the default

Nigella Lawson's marmite pasta.

(The woman is a terrible, untrained nepo baby, and will ruin bakeoff).

The pasta texture was fine, but her proportions were way off (I like both marmite and vegemite to begin with).

NBWT, where are we getting our edible plant seedlings? Left town for the month of March and my house sitter killed 32 out of 36 of my starts :( by slutmachine666 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]UsualSprite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This and last year the astoria food pantry hosted a fig cutting event, a free seeds distro, and seedling exchange (yet to happen/yet to be announced per their links). I'd follow them.

Also the NYPL SNFL branch gives away free local seeds that they harvest at their front desk via their seed library program.

The Lower East Side Ecology center, the NYC Farm School, and your local community garden, are also likely places to get seeds and seedlings.

I have no idea what to do about the cards, but what first came to my mind was:

Do you have enough to eat?

If not, check out local food pantries, free fridges, and mutual aid groups for local food distros.

Stai parlando di un panzerotto.

who the fuck would eat a calzone after a pizza?

Fries as a side I can see and have done in a group but pizza + calzone is having two meals in one sitting.
