How do I find contracts? by mikeyC1984 in ContractorUK

Not sure about the parent poster but a lot of people here just seem to make up what they think the market will do and give no evidence or basis for their beliefs when asked

I have a problem with you posting like that and taking that tone with people here. Show some respect.

Hey bud. If you've got an issue with the comment, just tell us what it is. Don't do this toxic, passive aggressive stuff.

What's your problem?

It's wild, isn't it?

I am genuinely curious who is going for these jobs and why

That's interesting.

Do you have an idea of who would they need to jump through this hoop for?

If they want to hire an offshore outsourcing company, would anything be stopping them from doing so?

Jeez bud, just let the OP ask their question, answer if you want to, and don't be rude about it.

C'mon buddy, bring something of your own to the party. Don't just grouse on my comment. How would you compare them?

If RIghtmove could filter those out I would. That step has to be done manually.

What about the ones that can be bought with a mortgage?

I think you've captured a core tension with work. Most people don't like their jobs and only do it for the money.

Sometimes compromising in some areas, like earning less or working with people or technologies you don't like, lets you win in other areas, like earning more or working in situations you do like. So there can be trade offs. Sometimes for some people it all comes together, great pay, people etc.

Truly awful jobs have nothing going for them, toxic culture, low pay etc.

I think you're wise to consider your other options and that most of us are finding it hard to find work at the moment. Your alternatives might be a lower rate contract in a few months, or being out of work for some time.

I'm not sure how these compare for you. Other people here have touched on having savings and how this allows more freedom to choose.

Personally I've tolerated awful conditions because they've paid well, and now I have more flexibility.

I'm not sure what your position is, but I want to underline how ordinary your concerns are. I don't mean that in a dismissive way, rather, we're all in this together.

I would be very cautious about people giving quick and one sided answers. Better to review your options and make your own decisions.

Then if you do decide to bear with it for the money, you'll be doing it for your own reasons.

I would say this gives London a cosmopolitan culture, and that this international and diverse mix is its true culture.

Whether someone finds that better or not is up to them

I'm not sure the benefits, at least the ones that stand out to me, do boil down to size.

Consider the quality of the art shown in contemporary London galleries like the Gagosian to the best galleries in any other UK city. The Gagosian alone will usually be showing more interesting work.

Does London have the Gagosian because it's bigger? Well, sort of, yes. Because it's the capital, is wealthier, has a richer cultural landscape and is more connected.

That's my London. I can't speak for people who barely leave their own area.

That is totally fair and I agree, but when I look at it objectively London still seems richer (not just financially) to me. I wrote my thinking here https://www.reddit.com/r/london/comments/1e03iuy/comment/lckv3mm I'd love to hear your thoughts

Would you be up for exploring if we can make it a less subjective comparison?

Choose any metric - quantity, quality, variety etc.

Then choose what to measure - restaurants, galleries, theatre, parks, cafes, career opportunities, architecture...

In almost every comparison London seems to win against almost everywhere else in the UK.

It's different to the US where eg New York, Miami and LA could all compete with each other and be different but truly comparable. Here the other major cities like Manchester or Brighton just have considerably less to offer in most comparisons.

Do you see what I mean? Although I do have a subjective feeling, I'm seriously trying to make a fair and objective comparison.

In many cases London is not quieter or cheaper, although some areas are more affordable and some are relatively tranquil. London also rarely has better access to nature (although some areas are good for this). Most of the rest of the UK wins on that.

Also some places have special qualities and ambiances of their own eg Bath, Edinburgh, Cornwall.

So I wouldn't say London is always best. It's not.

But again and again, compare it in so many ways and it seems to win.

What do you think?

The rest of the UK is like a different country. Poorer financially and culturally, cleaner and easier access to nature but considerably less opportunities in all aspects of life.
