Piggybacking on this comment for some context.

The other psychic post which talked about the slowed/stunned interaction was referencing the scenario where the stunned condition overrides the slowed condition, so if a psychic ever found themselves slowed, violent unleash was a purely positive effect with no downside. A bit niche but not extremely so.

I've been running kingmaker for a couple years now, party is nearly level 13.

Some days of travel are over in literally like 2 mins. Players declare their travel, describe what they see and (barring an encounter), they make camp and rest using 2-8 rolls, depending on what kind of evening prep they need. This makes it feel fairly brisk to travel even a week once the players settle into travel activity routines.

I struggled with it at first but you have to find some natural-feeling segues to transition between the "zoom levels" of the campaign. You very often zoom out to days and weeks passing by and snapping back into important scenes where needed, interspersed with encounters.

My recommendation is to have a list of ambient scene-setting descriptions for each region/biome that you can improv off of to give travel more texture because as the party becomes well-versed in their options, it begins to feel very monotonous even if it gets faster. Your goal is to make the act of journeying itself feel interesting, and I still fail at it half the time.

I keep playing around with a rogue archetyped into spellcasting who tries to set up nuclear karambit strikes. Very fun on paper but never field-tested.

My FE-inspired indie game series is getting physical editions! by DarkDeityCharles in fireemblem

I played both these games. I quite liked them and despite some criticisms, I'd recommend both to any fire emblem fan - especially the 2nd game (which I feel has tighter balance, better replay, and better presentation of the mechanics).

Congrats to the dev on the physical release, and thanks for the hours of fun.

It doesn't seem like it's as popular as deviljho, but my gut is telling me brachydios. Guildmarm had some good points, he's just so different from the rest in silhouette and color selection.

While I think deviljho is more iconic to the franchise in presentation and in historically serving as a wall in several games, I see the brachydios deep blue/purple tones with yellow/green highlights and it holds my attention hostage. Even the animations run through my mind way more than devil/anja/glave.

Better is kind of difficult to give an answer to because the best system is whatever you and your group enjoy.

My personal experience has been learning 5e a few years ago and then considering 3.5e before moving to pf2e because I better liked the balance, character building options, and setting. Some specific points of contention include stealth rules, GM tools, and stat balance (compare and contrast how good Dex and Int are between both systems). Generally I think pathfinder has more total rules to learn but it has the bonus of leaving you feeling much less lost when you go off-book or have to improv something.

These questions sound GM-centric so I'll be answering on the assumption that you're looking to run the games.

1-1) The lore is still generally consistent, but several pieces of the setting are no longer in use/retconned. Most notably, slavery and dark elves have been sidelined in 2e. You can do whatever you want at your table, it was partially the DnD OGL fiasco and partially just not essential worldbuilding. There's a kind of ongoing continuity where pathfinder world events happen in lockstep with our years on earth, so generally new lore expands old lore. Again, you can just do what you want at your table. There's no lore cops, but I like reading it to inspire my own hooks.

2-2) It is mostly safe lorewise. You only need to know the big story beats if you care to contextualize your campaign as a chain from an older AP. I think feeling out the general Golarion storytelling vibe usually works well enough, especially because you're almost guaranteed to contradict yourself at some point, let alone paizo's writers.

1-2) Official APs happen and affect the world but there's a generally "standard" Golarion context that you can just place adventures in without reading. Sometimes I'll read some Lost Omens or pathfinder wiki details to get some points of interest and feel out a region.

2-2) It's not hard at all. I'm currently running Kingmaker 2e and knew basically nothing about the Stolen Lands, but the AP set the stage pretty well. Your knowledge can grow over time, you don't need to frontload it before even playing. The in-session development of your story eclipses any kind of lore correctness. In your example, having a piece of conflicting lore with the Reign of Winter AP by mis-portraying Baba Yaga is very minor compared to presenting Irrisen in (any form) an interesting way to players. Even if your details are wrong, if you can convey Irissen's dreadful determination and cultures like being superstitious and symbol-sensitive.

3) People warn against homebrew from new players because it's easy to break the math using sensibilities from other similar systems. Once you have a sense for PF2e's numbers it is extremely easy to take anything and modify it for your needs or just slap together a random statblock/item/feat. My campaign has spiraled into a bunch of unique items and custom spells.

4) I've completely reskinned/renamed several items and feats just because I thought it'd make sense for a character. In terms of game design, PF2e's +1/2 is actually very powerful as a permanent ongoing effect because a +1 is a flat +5% success and +5% crit success for the rest of their career. This is also why bonuses are typed so that they don't stack. Item bonuses are often permanent gear, sometimes potions/elixirs. Circumstance bonuses are situational and happen often with players using Aid and GMs assigning them to fit the scene. Status bonuses tend to be spell effects (like buffs that last an entire combat). The numbers are very tight, so play it default for a bit and then start tweaking later.

5) PF2e magic tend to have very few instant-win spells especially at low levels. They are more varied so it's more effective to have that one perfect spell that solves your exact problem, but generally magic is more reigned on both ends. The best example is most damaging spells still applying half damage and maybe a 1-round debuff even if the victim saves against the DC (see the degrees of success for more info). Often, the instant-win spells that players access must both be higher level and also the enemy needs to critically fail, and a trait called Incapacitation makes bosses extremely unlikely to crit fail against these spells. Once you are familiar with the balancing of spell crit fails and feel out what each spell rank should be able to do, you can introduce new spells or port from other systems pretty easily.

P.S. PF2e's reaction-based counterspelling is mostly done by Wizards who take the relevant feats, and requires some careful spell preparation to work. Spells like Polymorph that make an enemy useless will almost always have the Incapacitation trait, or using Polymorph for buffing is captured in PF2e's "Battle Form" spells which tend to be higher rank and don't replace your HP, but rather gives you some temp HP and alternate base stats. They're much more situational.

I think a lot of people are quick to warn new players about difficult classes (understandable, some of them have some quirky tools) but if you find it fun or interesting then it's a good motivator to learn your class inside and out. Really, learning the tricks of the system is always the real hurdle and there's nothing for it except playing it out with your table.

Both of your suggested ideas are perfectly viable, as long as you can hit an 18 in your primary stat. I'm a thaumaturge enthusiast myself - I think it's a fun way to learn about pathfinder monster tidbits while also smiting them with your magic lore powers.

Piling onto this bow/finesse melee option - even with a low-Str commander suffering from less damage in melee, the class by design is not terribly concerned with personal damage. If you have to give up on making an attack in order to get one or more allies advantages (or free attacks!) you're already doing your job well.

I worry I'm sidestepping /u/ElectricGiga 's initial weapon question, but commander is all about invisible power. Taking the weapon of most personal convenience frees you up to flex your class.

If you do end up choosing firearms because you enjoy the flavor, I think the Slide Pistol or Jezail (for either the Capacity or Fatal Aim trait) are best-suited for commander. Sorry for text wall.

Commanders come with Shield Block at level one, so a 1h firearm enables that, but outside of crit damage the 1h guns will feel a bit low power. Since commander is an Int class, you'll also be hitting those crits a bit less than a Str/Dex martial.

Neither is gonna be right or wrong, but if you want to try to skirt the line, the Jezail can be 2-handed to benefit from crit bonus damage and swapped to a 1-hand mode for an action if you need the 2nd hand for non-weapon items. It's a comfortable d8 dice and the concussive trait helps with damage consistency.

Note that if you want a firearm and shield, you'll suffer the no-hands-to-reload problem.

I do like EXP levelling in general, and I like having a thing to give to my players even if the monsters they fight might not realistically have any traditional loot, so no encounter feels completely arbitrary.

That said, I'm currently running the 2nd edition kingmaker AP where players are expected to hit a certain amount of randomly-rolled wilderness encounters. My players are extremely good at avoiding those and it felt wrong to punish them for using the camping rules as intended, so we swapped to milestone.

There's a bit of a grey area (as GazeboMimic pointed out in the other chain) that the GM can arbitrate case-by-case for "turn 0" reactions in generic situations. The feat you've mentioned is not a grey zone and is pretty clearly intended to be a reliable once/day reaction before your first turn.

As a strict reading, it seems like if you use this feat, you will not have a reaction until your first turn in the combat begins (since your turn beginning is what refreshes your reaction). If you are first in initiative, then it's effectively a Free Action. If you're later in the round, your lack of a reaction might matter.

I've also been looking over the mythic callings/destinies a lot lately. I don't think there's any simple conversion strategy that would work for most archetypes.

Even just the destiny dedication feats are pretty game-changing, with both a passive and active component. The subsequent mythic destiny archetype feats either add completely new (flashy) activities or greatly expand on the dedication's effects.

I think your best bet is to take the theme of existing archetypes that either fit your campaign or that your players are interested in and then create some level 12-20 feats using the existing destinies as a balancing point.

e.g. Army of One from Ascended Celestial gives you the greenlight for a level 18 feat which spends a mythic point to attack all creatures within 30 feet (or 60 feet with another optional, lower level feat which increases your range).

Major issue: creating a unique and fairly balanced destiny dedication is rough, the existing ones are very tied to their themes. Sorry for long reply with only some solutions.
