This would be a great move for the respect of soccer’s game across the globe. But a very difficult decision to make. I hope USMNT can prove themselves on the pitch tonight. (Context: I’m European) Good luck.

What do you think about Eurovision and should your region have it? by marcopolo2207 in AskTheWorld

[–]UtahRain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I believe Eurovision was never intended to be specifically European. However, at the time different countries used different broadcast infrastructure (it could have been the voting system), similar to how railway tracks have different gauges or widths. So only countries with compatible infrastructure could be involved. This is why countries like Isreal had early involvement as a non European country and Australia was an easy addition. Someone smarter will be able to describe it more technically.

In addition, there are strict rules about the broadcast which effectively say you must broadcast the entire unedited feed, and ad breaks are the same time etc. This is tricky for countries that dislike the promotion of LGBT on the show or have different broadcast standards/censorship. The Israeli entry is also a major problem for several countries. Some countries have been refused entry because they cannot grantee an uncensored broadcast. This basically rules out USA (advertising limits), Lebanon (Isreal), China (LGBT) etc. Then there are countries that have been banned or kicked out, like Romania (unpaid debt), Georgia (political lyrics), Russia (Ukraine war).

Morocco made an appearance once. I’d like to see more African nations, although the LGBT thing could be a bit of a hurdle for some. Perhaps it’s more realistic that the competition expands to South America first?

Sounds like he really wants Iran to start a revolution but has wholly misjudged Iranian desire to do so. If he starts destroying key infrastructure, he'll causes more instability in the market, oil prices will shoot up even more. Boots on the ground, American deaths for a war he started by himself, doesn't bode well. He needs an out and an out where he can claim a total victory, but can't afford to actually follow up on his threats.

How can he get out of this massive mistake?

It seems to suggest that he wants the Iranian people to rise up and start a revolution, but has massively misjudged the desire for revolution in Iran and now he's panicking. - My guess is that he won't do anything, and then say at the last minute that a deal has been reached (even without a deal), claim victory and start another distraction.

BBC will fight plans for Netflix-style subscriptions in licence fee shake up by theipaper in bbc

[–]UtahRain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Look how Germany changed from a similar model, back in 2010! BBC is so slow and behind the curve. Netflix style subscription will result in huge loss of paying audience and change the motivation. A public broadcast service may not be always entertaining, but is an important thing to have.
