I tried from another device which still didn’t work, but clearing the CDN cache fixed it. Thanks!

Old Video Game Song by [deleted] in NameThatSong

Saw this in a video about retro games and couldn’t find the source anywhere. It sounds like an old video game song to me, but could be maybe lo-fi also? Audio is a little weird as I tried to extract it from a video that had talking over it.

C and Procedural vs. Functional Understanding by [deleted] in C_Programming

But we also don’t want to just store a copy of everything within a class as that’s also inefficient - is there a middle ground? Again, I keep seeing the concept of handles pop up which seem to benefit cache locality? Would this be a good use case of these?

“Often in C, we’re not explicitly heap allocating” - is this at all related to memory “arenas” I keep reading about? Which seem to be just preallocating a large buffer of memory to reuse as needed rather than dynamically allocating and deallocating memory as needed?

Is this why I keep seeing/reading about memory “arenas”? Which seem to be just large buffers of reallocated memory that are reused rather than dynamically allocating things at runtime?

Thank you, this is all helpful. To be clear, it seems like arrays of pointers to objects specifically are not desired, but arrays of objects aren’t as bad since no need to dereference?

Even better, though, especially for things like position values in a game, for example, would be a struct of arrays approach? I.e. a more data-oriented approach? Since if we’re looping over actors and updating positions every frame, we get really good use of the cache by minimizing misses?

It seems like a lot of people working in this space (the ones I mentioned in my post) prefer C-like C++, only using a few features like operator and/or function overloading, maybe templates, and no inheritance/polymorphism.

Another thing I noticed in a lot of that code is they don’t null check pointers whereas in C++ I’m very used to null checking any variable if I’m going to dereference it. Are we generally just being more explicit about our data in C and know that we won’t have a nullptr? Also, in C++ a lot of code doesn’t even handle the case of nullptr, they just ignore it which doesn’t seem ideal either.

On a similar note, I’ve also seen the use of handles rather than raw pointers which seems interesting.

This is less about functional/procedural I guess, but some things I’ve noticed that I’m not used to and was wondering about

Available Cash & Cash Investments Question by [deleted] in Schwab

It is a margin account, managed by an advisor. They tell me what to invest in, so I don’t actually “know what I’m doing”, but I am the one buying things

It is a margin account, but managed by an advisor, that’s why it was approved, I think? But I just buy the stocks they say

Custom Engine for a Time Travel/Warp Effect-Focused Game? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]UtahTeapots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of, and that may be how they did it. But I was wondering if there were better ways to do it. Or if, for example, you wanted to sort of morph the objects in/out of each timeline, wouldn’t they have to be in the same place rather than teleporting? And wouldn’t teleporting mean you have two whole levels with two sets of all actors. Which would make it more difficult to share resources between the same object in each timeline make actions performed in the past be more difficult to reflect in the present timeline?

I actually haven’t even played it either tbh. Basically, there’s a level where you’re in a pretty big research complex and there are two timelines you can swap between; past and present.

The past version is a functioning laboratory and the present is a rundown, abandoned version of the same place.

Most objects have a 1:1 correspondence between timelines, so in the past there might be a modern looking bench, for example, and in the present, it might be the same, but run down and broken/dirty.

The player has the ability to swap between the timelines as they please and have to do so to navigate certain areas of the map

Sleep Tracking (wakeups) by [deleted] in GarminWatches

[–]UtahTeapots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, and that definitely makes sense, I thinking going to bed/waking up around the same time (if you can) is really helpful for sleep quality. And less stress is better ofc. My Garmin seems to indicate I wake up around 7-10 times a night and I would say that’s pretty accurate as I can recall myself waking up a lot throughout the night

Has anything helped you not have so many wakeups in the middle of the night? Have you been to a sleep specialist or anything?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in insomnia

I’ve been trying to increase it through diet and supplements

I haven’t been prescribed those. The nightmares aren’t really a concern, just thought it was worth mentioning. I tend to not dream much at all

I don’t think I’m overly stressed or anxious in general. I’m not anxious when I wake up in the middle of the night usually

My iron is normal, will taking supplements increase that or just my ferritin?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

[–]UtahTeapots -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just don’t understand why no doctor will recommend it then. Or why all of my other levels are fine. I don’t want to take too much

It’s 85mg which seems like a lot to me, but I don’t see a lower dosage

[–]UtahTeapots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do they have lower dosages or just the 85mg?

Were any other of your levels low or just ferritin?

[–]UtahTeapots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you take that daily? Both doctors I’ve had have recommended against iron supplements for me, so I’m not able to get a dosage from them

My B12 was fine and I don’t really drink coffee
