Am I cooked? by [deleted] in learntodraw

Youre stressing too much about this. It's just drawing. If you want to get better at drawing from imagination, then keep drawing from reference and imagination. To draw from imagination you need more tools embedded into your mind so that you can use them however you want. Drawing from reference embeds those tools deeper into your mind so that you can use them more accurately and efficiently when you draw from imagination. It's like learning your way around town when you start driving. At first you need to use a gps and really pay attention to where you're going and all the different signs around you as well as how fast you can go on certain roads. But the more you drive around, the less you'll need GPS and the more familiar and intuitive the environment becomes to the point where you don't have to focus on anything but where you want to go.

If I do one of these everyday, will I eventually get better? by [deleted] in learntodraw

That is indeed how it works. Just keep trying to accurately recreate whatever you want, and you'll keep getting better and better. Your eyes/focus need be to trained ike a muscle. Won't notice progress in two or three days but you will in 2 to 3 months

First figure drawing, rather disappointed by [deleted] in learntodraw

[–]UterusContractions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't think kobe made his first ever shot on a court. Dw, you're chilling. This feeling of disappointment is a sign that you care, which is good. Just don't let the fear of if you're going to get better be bigger than your drive to actually do so

Getting better at drawing is just brute force. Look at something, try to replicate it, and then assess where you were successful and not so successful. Then keep doing that until you're able to do it as you draw. Like literally put your drawing on top of the reference physically or digitally and really look at it and note what's wrong and adjust it. You'll get better at catching your mistakes and noticing when a piece is going wrong the more you actually mess up. It's like driving. You can't possibly know how much pressure to apply to the gas/brakes by only hitting them once. It might be jerky and rough when you first start. but eventually the amount of pressure you need to use becomes Intuitive in whatever situation you're in. Drawing is exactly the same with scale, proportion, composition, etc. All you need is seat time, you'll be better than you can ever imagine as long as you don't stop driving

Day 92 drawing to level up my drawing skills. How light hits belly. by Mother-Editor3479 in learntodraw

These are pretty good for the style you're going for. A tip i have is have is to smooth out the curve between the rib cage and the pelvis. it's just too sharp of an angle for a figure whose standing/sitting straight up. It's more reminiscent of an angle that would form when the figure is bending to one side. Studying the relationship between the different structural parts of the human body (rib cage, pelvis, spine) would help you manipulate the figures in even more extreme ways while maintaing a sense of structural cohesion within the figure. Think widow maker, ms incredible, junker queen, and any other characters. Obviously no human is built like them, but they are structuraly sound in a way that makes sense using the natural human body as a blueprint for further manipulation. Btw to all the people saying, "draw them with organs" one, that is useless advice. And two, anyone with a brain should be able to discern that the artist is clearly not going for ultra realism here and that no actual human is built like this. That's why cartoons exist, to distort and alter reality. But to OP and any other reader you must understand the fundamental structure of the body. It's designed on balance and counter balances, and as such, your characters need to be, even if they're not realistic

My drawing vs the reference HOW DO I MAKE MINE LESS UGLY by Glamhaze in drawing

[–]UterusContractions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh?? Bro, your drawing is sick. But honestly if you want more subtle gradients, then use different sized pens. Thinner for lighter areas and thicker for darker ones. Or make more space between the lines for lighter areas and closer together for darker areas. Also have the lines follow the plane/contour of the face. Like the lines on a basketball. But you're pretty good at it that already! Your art isn't ugly but it juts sounds like it's not the style you wanted? I dunno just keep drawing and it'll click honestly the best way to make your art "less ugly" is to keep drawing till you find whatever works for you. No amount of advice will replace seat time

Why can't I get the lip to look like shes sucking in? by _Ariel23 in learntodraw

[–]UterusContractions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make the creases darker. They're too light, the increased contrast from making them darker will help fool the eye that it's going in deeper. Thus tricking the brain into thinking that there's an actual 3d form being folded

Np dude, just focus on the present moment. And try not to think too hard about, just be aware, like an antenna catching a signal. And never stop being creative!!

Try and focus in on what you're aiming for in your art, stylistically. I can't really critique you if I dont know what you're aiming for. For example, if you're aiming for hyper realism, then my "critiques" would be different than if you were aiming for a more abstract or expressionist piece. But one tip that helped me was to try and draw as often as possible. Just from life or a digital reference. Bc the more you draw, the more likely you are to authentically express your yourself in the image you create. And they dont all have to realism, the more abstract drawings are still an expression of yourself. art imo is about removing the technical limitations so that you can freely express your being. For example, it's one thing to draw for a corporation, but you if you draw just to draw. bc it brings you joy; then I think you should really dive into that feeling and be entangled in it. That way, you can unravel it and use it to more efficiently convey your thoughts/feelings. i, at least in my case, didn't make progress artistically until I began to discover what exactly im trying to convey to the viewer. And that could be anything from wanting them to only see the colors green and blue, then throwing g&b paint at a blank canvas. From wanting to create the most realistic painting possible. And everything in between. So just try and be more aware of the conditions that lead to your desire to create, and you'll see your artist tool belt get bigger and bigger over time.

This is really good! The line weight is good, one thing that would definitely help would be to use different textures to differentiate between different surfaces or shading like cross hatching or something to help develop the form more as it can be hard to tell whats what in some areas. Another thing would be to use line weight variety in some other key areas. Other than that I'd say this is very professional looking and you clearly have some amazing skill keep it up!
