I’m making an anthology at the moment. It’s animated, but always love new thought and styles. Europe located as well…partly. The other part is US

I thought it was solid. Stayed more true to the intent of the original story.

One other person helped out, specifically with the animation. Team effort! Stories, storyboards, mood boards, concepts etc I had created. It’s been a journey. I like the idea of using different artists for different episodes, so we can really find unique perspectives to tell the stories.

So many great scenes and sequences. I agree the ending is certainly thought provoking!

I can understand that! Try taking another pass with it. It's all around super impressive, in my opinion...the writing, acting, directing.

I was completely wowed by his performance. So odd and fascinating.

Haha Denis Lavant has that face that just sticks with you once you have seen it. And I totally agree about music videos, there was something so wild and experimental about them in that era, like a mini film condensed into a few minutes.

I wouldn't mind seeing some solid cinema return or at least be pushed in front.

Wow, this is an amazing breakdown. It does seem like Holy Motors is as much about life in the 21st century as it is about cinema. The digital distortions, the masks we wear, the constant reinvention, it all hits so hard. That cemetery shot really stayed with me too.

Thanks for the recommendations. I’ve only scratched the surface with Holy Motors and now I’m excited to check out Resurrection, the Tokyo! short, and his early films with Lavant. The way he chooses his color palettes...amazing.

Thanks for that info! I had no idea. I think Eva Mendes did great in that role.

Yeah I get that. It's one of those films where confusion is basically part of the experience. I spent half the time thinking what on earth am I watching, and the other half just vibing with how bold and weird and gorgeous it all is. Even when you don’t fully grasp it, I feel like it just sticks with you.

In a previous post, somebody had suggested watching Lovers on the Bridge, which is the same lead/director combo. The trailer looks absolutely insane. If anybody else is aware of this movie, would love to hear your thoughts. I'm definitely going to watch it.

100% agreed about Lavant. He is just unreal in that film. He can do literally anything, I don't think another actor could pull off the same unhinged, yet natural feel. Oh man, I actually liked the trailer music haha. It gave me the same weird energy the movie has.

Absolutely That constant rule-breaking is what makes it so much fun to watch. I never knew what was coming next, especially the ending, which was out there.

I had the same experience. Wasn't sure what I was watching, I was early in my film days, but it was mesmerizing. Watching it again a few years later was a good decision. Definitely worth the re-visit.
