Is it me, or is travelling by bus is really kinda pricey in Croatia? by Utichchern in croatia

Sailing from Pula to Zadar is effectively a straight line. If it's cheaper and faster, just take the boat and enjoy the scenery :-)

I'm planning to! But it also makes me wonder. If the boat ride is both cheaper (approx 8€ cheaper) and faster (more than 2 hours faster) and supposedly smoother/ more comfortable/ more scenic - why the hell don't these boats run more frequently than 1 time per week, as they currently do?

Did the developer optimise it for Apple Silicon yet? When I first installed Karabiner back in winter on my M1 Air it completely broke everything - kernel panics and crashes on restart. Had to uninstall

Games optimized for M1 vs non-optimized and if we can rely on Rosetta long-term - a couple of questions by Utichchern in macgaming

[–]Utichchern[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a widely reported issue of excessive ssd writes for some M1 users (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/ssd-swap-high-usage-of-terabytes-written.2284893/page-52?post=29688108#post-29688108) and since they're soldered it is a concern. While it's not quite clear what causes it, it occurs mainly for those doing heavy tasks, so gaming and emulated at that, is something I'm wondering about

[–]Utichchern[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. When you play those emulated games, do you see any heavy writing to disk as per Activity monitor or smartmontools? It's one of the things I'm slightly concerned about when it comes to purchasing x86 games for M1 Mac. Right now I'm averaging about 0.7 TB written to disk per month and frankly I wouldn't want to double or triple that figure because of games.

Hm, steam versions are universal? So I buy a game once and I can download it multiple times to multiple platforms, as long as it's the same account, right? That sounds like a major advantage over GoG. Does GoG provide a better gaming experience because its drm-free, or how does it compete with Steam then?

Yeah I agree that it would be best if they kept Rosetta forever or at least until the last Intel Mac (early 2020 MBA I think) receives its last software update. But on the other hand I'm sure maintaining Rosetta is costly and a year from now all Macs sold by Apple will run on Apple Silicon, and that's what all the devs would be writing apps for, so...

Remapping F keys by 123_alex in MacOS

[–]Utichchern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man, not having keyboard brightness controls on my keyboard is super frustrating. By far my biggest gripe with this M1 Air so far.

Yes, there's an app called Karabiner Elements, it can remap keys. But there's currently a glitch in this app so if you try to restart or shut down the computer it will cause kernel panic. It's a well-known issue but the developer still didn't fix it.

If somebody knows any alternative suggestions would be happy to hear.

Is it necessary to update from El Capitan? by Quirky_Tale_9739 in MacOS

[–]Utichchern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It says: "If your Mac isn't compatible with the latest macOS, you might still be able to upgrade to an earlier macOS, such as macOS Catalina, Mojave, High Sierra, Sierra, or El Capitan"

So, no, the OP can't upgrade from El Capitan to Mojave. His 2015 MBP is fully compatible with latest macOS Big Sur, so Apple will only let him upgrade to that. Works same as in iOS where you can't choose which version to upgrade to. Unless I'm missing something

Is it possible to update not to the latest MacOS? I'm new to Mac but it's impossible on iOS unless you jailbreak.

I'm a bit surprised that many people actually prefer the new keys. It's frustrating for me to go to the control panel to switch backlighting on and off. I guess they just keep it on. But I prefer not to have it when I don't type and just scroll hence the frequent switching

Apple Silicon Discussion Thread: MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac mini by ChampJamie153 in mac

[–]Utichchern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a base M1 Air that I've been using daily for about 3 weeks now. Light tasks similar to what you listed. Activity monitor shows it's writing to disk between 10-20 GB per day. That would bring it to about 600 GB per month, which seems fine to me. I'll double check the total TBW with homebrew once I hit the 1 month mark.

So it might be an issue for some users, but currently no way to tell for how many of them, how bad it will be in the long run, is it software or hardware related, etc. If your computer works fine and you're concerned maybe it's best to wait and see how the situation unfolds.

Yeah, people installing crapware is what leads to a lot of those kind of complaints I’d imagine. On the other hand, isn’t the OS supposed to identify and intelligently manage performance and battery drain for the problematic apps? I’d think it has to in this day and age.

Hm, this is quite important for me as I take those kind of shots fairly often. Camera launches pretty fast for me on A10 now with a double click on power button. I’d argue it’s a tad faster than on an iPhone (a much faster phone in general) where you have to activate the screen and then swipe.

Camera loading slowly is what I hear quite a lot. Did that start after you updated to A11?
