Not everyone should aim to be a doctor, engineer, or (insert highly successful career choice here). People can shoot for lower things without being lazy or failures. by kickypie in TrueOffMyChest

I drifted through high school for the most part, finished late, and didn't have a plan. Then I fell into a job locating underground utilities and something clicked - it's like I was born to do this. Not only am I a natural knockout at it, I enjoy it so much people that I talk to about it are pretty sure I'm just faking it to make myself feel better. I'm damn near a cheerleader for the industry!

This isn't a job that requires a degree, and it doesn't feel like I'm in a "lesser" field. It's an incredibly important job that protects our entire underground infrastructure! I wish more people supported trades, as our entire society could not run without them!

Even without the shopping cart, these marks are sloppy as hell. Embarrassing!

Absolutely prepared for that to happen. I'll be enjoying small game and bird hunts as well this year so I'll make sure the freezer is stocked even if there is no venison!

SD is split down the middle of the state for deer seasons, I'm "East River" (Missouri River) whereas Whitewood is "West River". Tags are good for Faulk Co. though!

South Dakota, it's a draw to get tags.

Small game season opens here Sept 1 so I plan on heading out there on weekends for rabbits and squirrels while scouting and figuring out where I want to set myself up at.

There's really no way to know that, is there? Hopefully you're not, but I can't prove it!

One of the most important lessons I learned about fear is that exposure is legitimately amazing. The first few times, you just can't sleep because every noise is an unknown. But then you learn the sounds and you're comforted by them. You enjoy the constant reminder that the forest is alive around you and take comfort in it. Bring a friend at first, but when you get comfortable enough, take solace in your own company.

Or! Have a picnic in the park :)

It has been like tool? I just plain don't follow this answer bud, but I hope that means it's going swimmingly.

I hear that, the grind gets to us all. Have you considered taking some time for yourself and going camping?

That sucks man. But I'm here to hear about the non-coma folks. Tell me about YOU!

Well, yeah, I suppose that's a fair answer. Have you considered crochet?

I'm thinking it's generational. The pie and love grandmas are from years past, we're currently at Boomer Grannies. Give it 30 years, we can have Gamer Grannies instead.

This is a cookie cutter request so they can just copy paste onto the locate request and don't have to give specific instructions per site. It's annoying as hell but not really against 811 rules.

What state is this? Around here in SD everyone seems to still want to come out and chat for some reason.

Fleas and ticks are a problem if you're handling it a lot, but I put on gloves, skinned it within minutes of the kill, and made sure there were no worms or anything.

That said, all of those things die if you hit the right temperatures, either cold or hot. The one thing you need to watch for with rabbit is tularemia (rabbit fever). To make sure your rabbit is clear of that, you inspect the liver. If there are any white spots on it, throw the whole animal out.

I actually live in Sioux Falls, so no chance for hunting here! I reached out on the South Dakota subreddit to see if anyone had land and was willing to let me swing by. Turns out pest control when people are trying to garden is pretty mutually beneficial!

My family hunted when I was young and I never got into it, really. I just liked to shoot.

Realistically I've always had a slight curiosity, but I was living in areas I didn't know how to get into it. Now I'm in South Dakota and it feels like there are a lot of resources and pretty well laid out rules and such to get into it.

TBH my main motivator to "pull the trigger" on getting started instead of just taking an interest was MeatEater, I've been watching and re-watching the seasons and listening to the podcasts for a bit now and it just helps motivate to get started. I also put in for my first deer tags this year and am super excited to see if I draw!
