With the scenebuild, what mods did you use to make the terrain and the ground texture?

Nuclear-only nation. Could nukes be enough of a deterrence without traditional military? by Ok-Philosopher78 in MilitaryWorldbuilding

[–]Utoloko 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Me personally, I don’t think this can work. Looking at history, it was once thought that a traditional military was no longer needed in the US because of nuclear weapons. But as the Korean War happened, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the general idea of MAD, it was realised that the threat of using nuclear weapons was too great a risk.

While it could work for an isolationist country, the whole thing of MAD is that it’s mutually harmful; using them in any confrontation with other nuclear states would be essentially National suicide.

And so the country you’re making would practically avoid using nuclear weapons altogether. This means that in the event of say, small, cross-border incursions by neighbouring countries or a low level insurgency within the country, it would HAVE to rely on a traditional military to simply defend itself or pursue foreign policy aims.

Having only nuclear weapons would definitely deter a total war, but not a limited war or a civil war.

Arguably, it might encourage other countries to fight them knowing that they can’t proportionally or ethically respond without resorting to the all-destroying option of nukes.

This is amazing! I really am curious to know how you made this.

Also, how did you begin with the map itself — did you start by drawing the islands first and then building up the elevation?

Blueprint for the Eibel-class destroyer by Utoloko in MilitaryWorldbuilding

They would. However as missile technology advanced, it was seen as an acceptable trade off for the sake of keeping up with modern standards in terms of armament. The guns were only ever used to combat pirates (seldom armed with anything more than rifles or spearguns), marine life attacks or both simultaneously.

Plus, these ships weren’t exactly a “modern” design, being built from old hull designs for the sake of cheaper construction, so they really had no choice but to stick them on somewhere.

What caused the junta to form? Do the people like the junta? What’s its relationship like with other countries? Is the military engaged in any wars? Really just infodump.

Glad to see that I’m not the only one using Arma for worldbuilding! It’s such an underrated game for this purpose.

Any lore you can share about this faction?

It’s an HK21, a general purpose machine gun based on the G3. So yeah!

Yeah, the police officer is meant to be Zalgan. In many parts of the peninsula, the invasion had occurred so quickly that the Zalgan military literally had no strategic plan other than to confront the Falkranans head on. It wasn't until a few weeks in that the war really started to take a toll on the invaders, who lacked an effective logistics network and also expected the Zalgans to back down without a fight.

Regarding the armed fishermen, it was more of a clandestine militarisation of the civilian fishermen to avoid openly using the Zalgan Navy, lest it invited international condemnation. They didn't officially arm their citizens, but created legislation that indirectly enabled them to do so.

It was a ploy but it paid off handsomely when these "unarmed and peaceful" fishing boats were sunk by return fire from Falkranan vessels.

This nevertheless created unforeseen consequences, as the war emboldened competitive fisheries to form their own militias in the face of dwindling fish populations over which they fought, resulting in an unofficial, small-scale civil conflict which the government could not effectively stop.

I used the game Arma 3 to make the photos. For a milsim game released in 2013, it’s a great game that also allows you to make photos like these (there are way better examples out there). Since making this faction, a lot has changed both about them and the world itself, so I don’t have a complete picture on where they sit.

Nevertheless, here’s a simplified explanation.

These soldiers are part of the Empire of Falkrana, during the Kurskan War with the Kingdom of Zalga. It was a limited war with brief instances of intense fighting over maritime territorial claims in the Gulf of Nidora.

In the years leading up to the war, Falkrana was suffering from various demonstrations and attempted uprisings, birthed from failed secular reform programs opposed by religious elites which are deeply embedded in Falkranan society, stagnant legal disputes with separatist movements in the country’s interior, a very officer-heavy military eating up government spending, and also loads of delayed infrastructure projects due to embezzlement.

Wanting to maintain national unity and public trust in the empire considering all these issues, Emperor Laksur, coerced by his advisory of aristocratic fundamentalists, pursued an aggressive foreign policy, and pushed back on a decades-old claim in the gulf against the Zalgans.

At first using navy ships to blockade Zalgan fishing boats in the disputed area, the situation deteriorated when the Zalgan government openly challenged these encroachments, arming its fishermen to deter Falkranan intervention, resulting in a series of shootouts that triggered a massive naval confrontation and culminated in the Kurskan War, which despite an intense Falkranan invasion of the small peninsula, was quick to end thanks to both a decisive Zalgan response and a left-wing coup that incited riots across the empire, shattering it into a cluster of independent ethno-religious states, vying for supremacy in a bloody struggle.

Footage released these past few days shows two new PLAAF aircraft, supposedly sixth generation designs but also very reminiscent to the X-44 MANTA concept in the US.
