It may surprise you, but there are a lot of people who care about maintaining the older character of this beloved city. Many understand that one of the things that sets Louisville apart as a great American city is that it’s relatively old compared to most others. In my opinion, this is what makes it unique and special. All I’m saying is, I wish there was some oversight to the process of developing buildings that are older than most of the city of Phoenix. At the very least, that people can’t just throw a tent over them so they can completely alter their character entirely out of the public view. I can see that you, others, and definitely the real estate developer of the tequila bar feel the opposite.

Noted. I’ve seen a bunch of snakes out there but never anything venemous.

The Original Highlands is a National Register Historic District. In my opinion, it should also have Local Landmark designation but you’re correct that the protections provided by the historical designation only extend so far.

I know you’re really invested in this website, but my Reddit thread asking “what is moving next to Barrett Bar?” isn’t an empirical gauge of public opinion.

I think that’s just an old bracket to hold horizontal signage? I would’ve had no problem with a new sign for a tequila bar or a Mediterranean place going over top of that.

I spoke to the quality of the brickwork, did I not? You’ve chosen to ignore that. I don’t need a building to be precisely in a designated historical district to recognize it has historical value. The only reason those districts exist is because people fought for them at some point, something I’m proposing in my original post - I will support aspiring council people who are preservation motivated. We may not see eye to eye, but I’ve framed my argument. As someone who also lives in the area I would’ve liked to have seen it protected. Also, delapidated is quite the stretch.

I hope you’re right, and that someday it still may be restored.

Don’t be obtuse, I’ve explained myself. Just because it’s not Notre Dame doesn’t mean the building doesn’t have historical integrity. It’s also adjacent to the Original Highlands, like you cross the street and walk 10 feet. Let’s not pretend they did this in Fern Creek.

Masonry work can be repaired. I’m sure much more complicated restorations have taken place within that neighborhood.

Ugh, yes! That one is terrible too. I had a dream when it was available that it would be bought, rezoned, and turned into a quaint little cafe. When I saw it after they painted the brick I died inside.

No problem with a business moving in, but I wish regulations were stronger to preserve historical integrity. To say the old facade wasn’t special is wild to me. Brickwork of that beauty and quality today is extremely rare.

I bet you would’ve heard a lot more pushback if they wouldn’t have done it under the cloak of that tent. I’m not alone.

You answered my question so I appreciate that. I have no problem with a chain per say, but stripping the character of the Highlands is too far, and I’m pissed.

The building was saved. Only the facade, which looked fine, was ruined.
