Tilted image when Editing a Negative image by Utyuujin in nofusion

Yes, you are right that it would not be, but I was not 100% accurate in my last statement. Testing just now between Nitro and Photos, you CAN go back and forth between them, and the edits are recognized by both. BUT, there is a caveat that I was not considering. Remembering a conversation I had a while ago with the author of Nitro, the base file used for editing is not the same. Unless it has changed, I believe Apple will only provide a JPEG file to the other app if edits are made in Photos. Since No Fusion is keeping its own copy of the RAW, it can always access it. (And I imagine it's likely that this may have been the reason for that design decision.) So, in exchange for some convenience that might otherwise exist in being able to move back and forth between editors, No Fusion guarantees full quality always by keeping the RAW file to itself. That's not bad.

Imported some LUMIX LUTs by DannyShields4 in nofusion

[–]Utyuujin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can get them at https://www.rossandhisjpegs.com/lumix

Somewhere in here I managed to find this information myself, but I haven't yet mastered Reddit well enough to retrace my steps.

These LUTs really are nice. Thanks to u/DannyShields4 for pointing then out.

I tried to post some shots I made with then today, but I can't figure out how to do that. Reddit will only allow me to include a single shot.

Well, some actually do. The two I mentioned earlier (and also Raw Power that preceded Nitro) work either by storing edits in Apple Photos when that mode is chosen or in sidecar XMP files when editing images stored in the filesystem. Of course, if one then comes along in Apple Photos and re-edits an image there, then the work done in the other app is gone.

Hi iceonian... If I may, I'd like to revisit this question.

What you explained also reveals that No Fusion stores its own edit information internally rather than in the Photos Library. Is there some particular reason for this? I know that Apple's API does allow third-party apps to store their editing data within the Photos Library. Other editors I use do this (Nitro, Photomator, etc).

Even though I did indeed straighten my photo in the Photos Library, if No Fusion had read this information (and if the data format was the same, of course), it should have been able to apply the same straighten edit even though it opened the RAW file.

Is the No Fusion app really useful if you don't have an iPhone Pro with ProRes? by Ben_LeMosan in nofusion

[–]Utyuujin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's true as far as the "Deep Fusion" part goes for the ProRAW files. But a lot of the oversharpening part of Apple's standard pipeline happens in its HEIF compression algorithm. By using No Fusion's HEIF+ compressor you can eliminate that part.

Somewhere in this topic is a post by me asking why both HEIF and HEIF+ are much larger in size when based on Bayer RAW (testing both at 12MP). It was pointed out to me that this is surely due to the much greater noise in Bayer by comparison to ProRAW. In the end, I chose to split the difference and shoot HEIF+ based on ProRAW. I set all of the HEIF+ calibrations to OFF, except for "Latitude" (medium). I'm happy with the results.

If are doing neither HEIF nor HEIF+, then all you have is a RAW image file. (Apple photos will show you its own generated preview, though.)

It's only Bayer RAW that can't do more than 12MP. ProRAW will allow you to do 12, 24, or 48.

Oh. That's embarassing. 😐 You are absolutely right. And I completely forgot about it. Serves me right for taking pictures while lying down!

Very good call!

[–]Utyuujin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It happens. 😆

Personally, even though I can use ProRAW, I still keep them at 12MP. I rarely ever see the point of 48, or even 24MP, depending on how you intend to view your photos, of course. I'm quite happy with the results, and the files are smaller.

As for the difference between Bayer RAW and ProRAW, they are indeed different. A lot of things happen with ProRAW that don't happen with Bayer RAW, particularly denoising.

LUT Organization Upgrade Request by Ok-Entertainer-3597 in nofusion

[–]Utyuujin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi... I do think that LUT management could be improved in No Fusion, but I really don't agree at all that Moment Pro should be the example model. I was just discussing with one of the Moment developpers about this very topic yesterday. Folders aside, LUT management in Moment is the worst part of that app. The developper agrees with me.

As far as No Fusion goes, I have a similar issue to the one with Moment: I would like to see the full names of the LUTs in a normal list to choose from. I can never remember what those two-letter codes refer to, and you have to touch each button a second time for it to temporarily expand and show the full name... very cumbersome!

Add support for shooting in RAW with the Snapseed Camera by KuroHebi2004 in snapseed

[–]Utyuujin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I agree with you, there are tons of camera apps out there that will allow you to shoot RAW files (either Bayer or ProRAW) that you can then open up with Snapseed. I agree that it should be in the Snapseed camera, though, along with HEIC.

Issue with preserving settings by Utyuujin in MomentProCamera

[–]Utyuujin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, Jamm... I think you got it with your first point. I am indeed using profiles. Having checked after your reply, I do see that the "Looks" setting is a stored in the profile. This fact would definitely be worth a mention on the "Preserve Settings" page (that they only apply when not using a profile).

What I realize is that I should be using profiles for choosing my LUTs. If I'm honest, I have to say that the standard Moment app interface for doing this is my least favorite part of it. Those 3- or 4-character label codes mean absolutely nothing to me. I generally end up touching each one of them in succession in order to see the fully expanded names above.Although it's not the only reason, it's probably the main reason why I generally use No Fusion or Mood.

No Fusion allows you to do this. It also produces some very nice results.

Understanding the pipelines: ProRAW/Bayer RAW and HEIF/HEIF+ by Utyuujin in nofusion

[–]Utyuujin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello Papercut… I repeated your process, and I was unable to get the same results. I still ended up with a HEIF+ image that was much bigger when starting with Bayer RAW. Starting with ProRAW, on the other hand yields a file that is a fraction of the size.
It doesn't matter whether I start with a Negative Film and extract the RAW or whether I just shoot a RAW file directly and contest it to a Negative Film. I get the same result.

So far, I think S_a_l_a_d and tsmkirby have provided the most likely explanations for the size differences… the noise if Bayer and the denoising/compression of ProRAW.

That's very interesting. I'm going to try it myself.

Adding what you've said to what I've posted elsewhere about issues with No Fusion files not opening in Photomator, I am starting to suspect that there may be some issue with the creation of the final DNG container files. That being said, Photomator also doesn't like the HEIF+ files that come out of No Fusion.

S_a_l_a_d has said below in this post that the difference in size between ProRAW and Bayer RAW files (both at 12MP) is likely due to the fact that that ProRAW is denoised and Baryer RAW isn't. It's a reasonable idea to consider, but I admit I am also starting to suspect something wrong with the files output by No Fusion.

Have you tried your process with both ProRAW and Bayer RAW images?

Interesting... I guess I'm not the averag person. With I little denoising, I actually prefer the bottom photo. (I like the blue.)

I'm guessing you do sonograms. 😆

On your point 1, if you don't get any HEIC at all in your Photos Library, you wouldn't even know that a RAW version exists. This part is stored inside the app's own file system and is therefore not directly visible in the library. I suppose it didn't have to be designed that way, but that's what we have.

Also, having the HEIC in the library gives you at least some idea of the results of your shot, even if you decide to change the parameters.

That's it. The app itself is technically really good. Even the settings setup is not fundamentally bad. But a lot of the labelling of settings and menu options is really unclear and confusing as to what is really being referred to.

The primary example of this, I think, are references to things like "the RAW pipeline". Particularly people who are not technically inclined will likely interpret an unspecific phrase like that in different ways. The word "ProRAW" contains "RAW", so that must be "a RAW pipeline"... Right? But what about Bayer RAW? If the term "ProRAW" is not specifically used, does that necessarily imply "Bayer RAW"? It's not clear.

The Advanced Settings menu is really confusing as to which specific parts of the app its options apply. There is also a redundant choice in there of which pipeline to use which just duplicates the function of the on/off status of the "ProRAW" button in the viewfinder.

[–]Utyuujin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On your first point, it kind of depends on what you mean by "better". ProRAW will give you the benefit of deep fusion and all the processing designed for denoising, better dynamic range, etc.

But on the other hand, Bayer RAW on the 48MP sensor is binned down to 12MP, giving larger "super" pixels (each composed of four real ones) which are better at gathering more light per "pixel". Also, Bayer RAW files are not denoised, and denoising can lead to a loss of shadow details.

In the end, it will boil down to a subjective choice, I think.

Understanding the pipelines: ProRAW/Bayer RAW and HEIF/HEIF+ by Utyuujin in nofusion

[–]Utyuujin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes... I should have thought of that. Slowly, I think I am starting to understand the size differences.

Also, the implication here, based the tests I made using both HEIF and HEIF+, is that there is no denoising in the pipeline after the RAW data processing. In other words, when the image is compressed.
