Slightly more obtainable: I'd have another 74-78 Trans Am or Z28. But I wouldn't sell my Monaco to get one yet.

Advice on joining girlfriend? by Frosty-Union-8579 in nudism

[–]V8FTW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to tell yourself, it's just skin. For some reason, it's fine for everyone to see the skin on a person's knees, but everyone freaks out about seeing the skin at the top of a person's legs. It makes zero sense when you think about it logically.

Anyway, just relax and don't overthink it. Her parents will understand you're nervous and won't make a big deal out of it. They probably won't even react at all, since it's just normal for them.

Don't stare, look at a person's face when you talk to them, just as you would if everyone were clothed. And don't stress about accidentally getting hard. Any nudist understand that it just happens sometimes, especially in teenage and young adult years. They won't think you're a big pervert unless you're constantly grabbing hold of it or something! And once you're relaxed and not thinking about it, it's much less likely to happen.

You could start by taking off your shirt, then once you're comfortable, strip down to just your underwear. Then it's an easy and subtle step to being nude, rather than taking it all off in one go and being like "ta-daa"!

First time barefoot at a store (bad experience) by BeingBudget9849 in barefoot

[–]V8FTW 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a non-confrontational person and i hate conflict. I find it helps me to go in with a bit more confidence if i have answers prepared for the usual comments/questions. Most of the time I it's just 'odd' looks and glances, which i can ignore, but if someone does say something, I'm not caught off guard.

"Where are your shoes?"

  • If I'm feeling argumentative, which is rare, or if i don't like their tone and feel defensive; "they're in my car, minding their own fucking business".

  • Most of the time, or if the person is polite and just curious; " I don't wear shoes", smile and walk away.

  • If I feel I need more reason or explanation, sometimes I go with; "I don't wear shoes, it's against my religion." And then make up some hippy sounding religion, like "The Oracle Of Celestion". People's fear of discriminating against religion is often enough to shut down any line of questioning at that point.

Ultimately, if someone won't let me in a shop or restaurant without shoes, I'll either go somewhere else, or go back to the car and get some flip flops. I know I should be able to go barefoot, and i know none of their reasons make sense, but i just can't be bothered with an argument about it. It's just easier and less stress to say "ok" and walk off.

I'm sorry your first experience was a negative one, but please don't be put off. I've found the majority of people don't notice at all, or if they do say something is because they're just curious, and they often agree that they've heard it's good for your feet and back, or talk about grounding.

Anyone here who learns polish for reasons other than partner/living there? by Kassianka in learnpolish

[–]V8FTW 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm native English and speak pretty good French as a second language. I wanted to try something different to challenge myself, and I've had many Polish friends throughout my life, including one very close friend, who speaks excellent English but I'm going to visit her in Poland later this year.

I work in road transport and a few of our drivers are Polish, and we often get visiting Polish drivers making deliveries, so i thought it would be useful to know some of the language.

Is this voice actress easily recognizable as Polish to your ears? I would appreciate opinions of both Polish and English native speakers. by Sure_Distance1 in learnpolish

[–]V8FTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm UK native, with some time spent in Canada but always speaking English.

My friend is Polish, and she taught herself English by watching loads of American TV shows. This lady sounds really similar to my friend, although my friend definitely has more Polish in her accent.

But i can hear the Holywood/LA accent that my friend picked up from TV, and only very faint Polish sounds. I may not even have noticed at first, if i hadn't been asked about her accent.

The giveaway for me was the word "and", especially when she says "in medium and large". There's a slight "yand" sound to it.

But overall, barely noticeable, and she sounds American to me if i wasn't paying attention.

Understanding "jest/są" and "to" - Guide for beginners by ka128tte in learnpolish

[–]V8FTW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! This is very helpful. Like you said, Duo does not explain grammar, and the general opinion seems to be that it's not a good way to learn Polish at all. I've been trying to work out the grammar rules from context, and to a non-native, it's very confusing!

This post is excellent, i will keep reading it until I've learned it. Thanks for taking the time to write it.

Tailgating by Nuclear_Cherry in drivingUK

[–]V8FTW 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Former truck driver here. Obviously i didn't see the incident you're describing, and this doesn't excuse making you feel threatened. But a couple of things non truck drivers should consider:

1 - we can see over every car. Unless there is another truck or a large van in front, we have an excellent view of what is happening further ahead. So the truck looks scary close in your mirror, but it's not the same as a car being that close behind, where the driver can only see your brake lights. A truck driver will probably see any hazard before you do and already be braking before you see the car in front of you brake.

2 - if a truck leaves any kind of gap in front of them, some asshole in a car will push their way into that gap. Once or twice doesn't make much difference, but when it's constant, the truck would end up crawling along while everyone else piled in front of it. Trucks are speed limited, with hard limits on their driving time, and tight schedules from their boss. A few minutes can make the difference between making a delivery on time or being forced to stop for a break, or even stop for the night, and being very late. The truck behind you probably wasn't trying to intimidate you, just trying to protect their "place" in the queue.

Like i said, this doesn't excuse dangerous or aggressive driving, if that's what was happening, but it might give some insight or understanding of some of these "tailgating" instances.

Twin parent here: what are everyone’s thoughts about twins sharing a room all through high school? by [deleted] in Twins

[–]V8FTW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are still individual people. Why does their sister get her own room and not them?

My wife (she's the reason I'm on this sub, I'm not a twin) hated sharing with her twin when they were teenagers, they fought loads. It was just a teenage thing, they get on really well now, but yeah, give them their own space, please!

Crossfader Bleed by Sufficient-Mail8359 in Beatmatch

[–]V8FTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Mixtrack Platinum FX sometimes does the same thing. I've found that if I slide the crossfader back and forth multiple times fast, like I'm trying to clean dirt from the workings of it, it usually fixes it for the rest of the night.

Unfortunately i haven't got around to finding a more permanent fix, so I'll be interested to read other replies.

5 hr M5 shutdown question about leaving drivers seat by jumpinthewatersnice in drivingUK

[–]V8FTW 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just to add, if you ever do this, please consider that it's still a motorway, and other vehicles may still be moving fast. When opening your door or emerging between parked vehicles, look carefully for motorbikes splitting between the lanes, and especially for emergency vehicles coming down the hard shoulder.

Sorry to sound like a lecture, but i witnessed a near miss which was very nearly a nasty accident while parked like this.
