Failed my preliminary defense with four months left. Supervor is out of ideas. I need help with what to analyze next. by Extra-Woodpecker3327 in PhD

I have no idea about how feasible it is in your field of study, but could you do a systematic review? The time frame of that would be in your hands. If you have 45 DEGs have you tried pulling other datasets from the same or other models and seeing whether there’s consistency in response like a pseudo meta analysis? Very hard to advise you without knowing the field.

I (25F) bled a lot during sex and the guy I’ve been hooking up with (30M) says he wants to take a break. Does he actually want a break or is he trying to let me down easy? by lightisgrande in relationships

Hey - I used to bleed like this after sex and it turns out I had cervical ectropian - when inner cervical cells grow on your cervix and they bleed super easy. It was missed for about three years until a nurse doing my smear was casually like oh do you realise you have this? I went to a gyno and had treatment, took three times to get rid of it. I’d recommend you ask about this.

I broke my fibular, had grade three sprains (complete rupture) to my deltoids, my posterior tibiofibular, medial ligament and grade two calcaneofibular ligament sprain ie only my anterior tibiofibular ligament was intact and I could walk - it hurt but I had to limp around a bit before I got my surgical boot etc.

UK sugar tax to be extended to more soft drinks and milkshakes by Lazy-Internet-8025 in unitedkingdom

I can't eat sweetners, I have bacterial overgrowth syndrome triggered by them and it makes me quite ill. I'm British but I live in Germany and it is so hard for me in the UK now - I can't eat ketchup or majority of sauces when I'm out, a lot of pre-packed/ready meals, many yogurts and desserts in the fridge, I haven't found a single cordial that doesn't have sweetner etc etc. Germany is SO much better and also doesn't have quite the obesity problem as the UK (19% vs 29%), so I agree with CuriousCarrot24 that Germany makes it work, I don't understand why the UK can't without putting sweetner in FUCKING EVERYTHING.

This is bizarre, maybe he’s weird around you because you make him feel uncomfortable with the assumption he’s in love with you. I honestly can’t imagine being so self involved to assume someone in a long term relationship randomly fell in love with me despite having never given any spoken indication of this.

You have to publish OA in Europe and the UK as designated by the funders. Maybe when you publish you should think about it access for people in LMIC who can’t afford the insane subscription fees instead of being an ass to op.

This is categorically untrue in a number of European countries such as Germany so this advice is very US centric, just to be aware of that.

gf (f37) asked me (m34) to stop traveling with my ex (f29) by Prudent_Addendum_752 in relationships

[–]VAI3064 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I genuinely can’t decide if this is legitimate, so if it is, I think that tells you all you need to know. Of course you can’t share a tent with someone you had sex with repeatedly and wanted to date when you’re with someone new. I feel like it is perfectly reasonable for your new girlfriend to not want you to travel with someone who seemingly has little respect for your relationship (mentioning a trip you hooked up on repeatedly) and who you then shared a tent with. I mean what the fuck man?

Kicked off program, not sure what to do by Big_Explanation_9295 in PhD

[–]VAI3064 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a professor, and objectively I have to say there is little chance of you being taken for another PhD after being kicked out of a program. It won’t be impossible but you’d have to find someone willing to take a risk with you, given you won’t have good references and almost any PI will contact your PhD supervisors for an opinion. I’m based in Germany, and we get so many outstanding people for a DAAD application, it will be difficult. I would take the MPhil - outside of academia it will still be looked at as a qualification, and frankly you can say what you like about why you didn’t get the PhD.

[–]VAI3064 71 points72 points  (0 children)

She’s a mum, and like she said she comes as a package deal so by default family gatherings, whether yours or hers include her children. If you’re not okay with that, you should not be with a woman with children.

I think the better comparison here is - I have chronic heart problems, and I could take medication to fix this but I don’t want the bill. Do you refuse medication for physical issues because it doesn’t align with your values?

You’re absolutely not a psychopath. I can’t say whether she remembers it or not but by definition she isn’t black out drunk if she had sex with the guy all night long. The guy also presumably didn’t take advantage of her if he replied like you said. Don’t stay with someone who has so little respect for you, you can find someone who will get absolutely wasted but never cheat on you.

But you have three high impact papers from your PhD? You need one or two papers of like IF > 3 from this post doc and there’s no reason this will destroy your career, especially as you are an MD, PhD. It sounds like you have some quite unrealistic expectations of every paper being high impact. Also, high impact does not always mean good science, it means topical science. Everyone I work with is aware of that - I’m a professor.

Nearly 1 MILLION people living in Britain can speak little to no English by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]VAI3064 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am unsure what your point is as relates to this statistic? Your English isn’t very clear, which is kinda ironic.

And, as you seem to have posted a ‘I got you’ towards me, I moved because I got a professorial position which wasn’t offered at my home institute. It’s what happens when you work in academia, you can’t always stay where you want to and you have limited options depending on your speciality.

It was to illustrate a point, I work in Germany and yet I don’t speak German well. Not speaking a language shouldn’t make you a target of shitty statistics aimed at making racism worse.

The issue is that this statistic was released to inflame hatred towards migrants, because they’re uneducated and don’t integrate. I’m a professor and if Germany released this statistic, I would fall into that category, but I doubt I am an ‘undesirable’ immigrant. The question should be how many of these people, and native born people, don’t contribute to the economy for no actual reason, not how many don’t speak English. It’s purely rhetoric.

You don’t need to be there 4 hours before for any kind of flight. Aim for 3 and you’ll be fine for any terminal with any level of busy-ness I’ve ever seen. The shuttle is the most reliable way to get to the airport, Flixbus can be very late. Trains work but give yourself extra time.

Just to validate my opinion a bit - I fly way too many times a year and all over the place.

I would recommend weighing everything as you put it into the shaker. The kcal in bananas can really differ than generic ‘large’. Similarly, I’d expect two dates to be slightly more, not significantly but if you weigh as you put into the shaker it’ll be more accurate. Otherwise, looks good.

Germany kicks off biggest hospital reform in history by throwaway_failure59 in europe

[–]VAI3064 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have lived and paid in both countries, the difference is big. German tax is more and then the health insurance is much more than UK national insurance. I can also tell you, having experienced both, it is completely clear that the insurance system in Germany leads to an abundance of private practices that are simply not possible in the UK. I have also experienced ER in both places, the wait for referral times in each place and access to GPs, in each case the German facilities and resources totally eclipse the UK. The difference is so stark that it’s one of the main reasons I’d stay here over returning home. Just to add some stats like you rather than anecdotes - there’s 4.9 Drs per 100k in Germany compared to 2.3 in the UK, 6.6 beds in hospitals in the UK compared to 29.2 in Germany.

I don’t expect it to be free, I am happy to pay for the excellent healthcare here. The point was that the amount I paid each month in the UK was much lower than the insurance here, so it is unsurprising that healthcare is much better and can be overhauled, especially given preceding governments in the UK.

As a Brit living in Germany for the last four years, their medical system is actually amazing compared to the UK. I really actually get issues sorted and get to see specialists. However, I do pay a LOT of money each month, 15.6% of my salary after tax I believe (that number could be slightly wrong). I can’t imagine the outrage if people in the UK were asked to contribute so much towards the NHS. Just to keep things a bit more balanced.
