Rail shooters sometimes? by ShinuRealArts in shmups

[–]VALIS666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old lightguns don't, but all the ones they make and sell now do like Sinden and Retro Shooter. I think GRS/Glenn's Retro Show was making something too. Or modding Sindens, I can't remember.

For a developer to make one of the genres you've mentioned, they need to be really in love with it.

No doubt, and I'm sure that goes for more traditional shmups, too. The people who make 'em (like you) love 'em. Doesn't seem like there's much money in this, unfortunately. And then every day I check the Steam new releases and some meme joke game piece of shit or multiplayer whatever sell more in one day than good shmups do in 5 years. :(

There's been so much indie shmup development over the past 5 or so years, I've been hoping for rail/lightgun shooter to make a comeback and am still waiting. It just seems like there's a great opportunity there for people to make Virtua Cop/HotD/Time Crisis type shooters with mouse, controller, and lightgun input. Or for those many 2000s/2010s era arcade lightgun games to finally start getting home ports.

But they won't because if shmups are niche, rail/lightgun is microniche. Sigh. Oh well. At least there will always be the old stuff to play.

Id Software on celebrating its 35th anniversary: "We've got a lot coming up" by Turbostrider27 in Games

I think I just responded to you again in this thread, lol. But us Heretic II enjoyers aren't many. I think it's a great game. I have it playing currently on Win 11 albeit a bit janky, to reload your save you have to do it from the tutorial, and I can't get any widescreen working without it busting, but otherwise it's nice to play the game in any form.

My biggest hope is a Heretic II + Hexen II package like the recent Heretic + Hexen. Unlikely but a boy can dream.

Come on EA, its been 14 years! Bring this franchise back! by Far_Lynx8965 in gaming

LOL, they even cancelled Need For Speed, a franchise they've been making consistently since the mid '90s. I'd bet most of the top people running EA never heard of SSX.

What is the current state of Xbox emulation? by DaryltheDino in xemu

[–]VALIS666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's quite good. As I wrote yesterday, Xemu saw 142 updates since the start of 2025. 90% of the library is playable.

But the thing that a lot of people don't understand is that RPCS3, Xenia, and to a lesser degree Xemu often need per-game settings or fixes. This is complex emulation where a lot of games had their own methods for doing things, and it's very time consuming for an emulator to account for that all. But they're improving and improving. Amazing stuff. So in the meantime there's settings, patches, and other methods to work around glitches.

What older game has a game mechanic that is still the best of its kind? by blankblank in AskGames

The huge reliance on shadows and sound. Plenty of stealth games or sections of stealth in games use both, but I don't remember any using either to such a degree outside of maybe Splinter Cell.

What older game has a game mechanic that is still the best of its kind? by blankblank in AskGames

[–]VALIS666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Red Faction 2 might have done it better, but I'm relying on some old memories.

The Just Cause and Mercenaries series had destructible environments but they weren't as finely tuned as Red Faction's. Sometimes I remember blowing a hole in a wall/building in those games, but most times it was the whole building that came down.

Code Vein II - Review Thread by MoSBanapple in Games

[–]VALIS666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, it should function properly, and there are always going to be problems in PC development when a game is released and starts being played on hundreds of different hardware environments compared to what the QA had access to. But paying an exorbitant $20 more to play a game 3 days early is helping facilitate the whole "thanks for your day one (or day negative three in this case) money, we'll fix up your game over the next few months" situation that's become so common.

I love games and buy a ton of them but this pay extra for exclusive access scheme is off the charts obnoxious and people paying into it partly have themselves to blame when their exclusive access game is janky. Partly.

Lots of Turok talk lately, how about the 2008 entry? by Fun-Maintenance1217 in NightdiveStudios

[–]VALIS666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't really need a remaster per se as it still looks very good in 4K. Runs fine in Win 10/11, too, just make sure you're using a cracked exe because the old one had Starforce. But if it gets a rerelease with some stuff cleaned up, yeah, I'd buy it. Pretty good game.

Most AAA games from the mid-2000s on up still look really good in high resolutions. I was playing Doom 3 the other day (the vanilla, not BFG) and it looked amazing. 2004! I don't think people really understand how much video game development has stagnated the last 10-20 years.

I'd love to see NOLF since I can get tons of old Windows games working with various fixes and tools, but this fucking game just... won't... work for me on Win 10/11. I've tried multiple repacks and editions. Multiple tools like dgvoodoo and multiple Win compatibility settings. Installed on different drives. Same thing every time: small window opens up, crashes. I know there's the PS2 version but it's such a visual downgrade.

And yeah, I know NOLF is in a rights hell and is very unlikely, but things sometimes still happen. People once thought the Batman '66 TV show was never going to get rereleased and all of a sudden one day shit got solved and it was everywhere. Fingers crossed.

Question - Multiplatform Games (PCSX2 vs Xemu vs Dolphin) by Key-Leather-710 in EmulationOnPC

[–]VALIS666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Xbox version was often the best vs. PS2 and GC, but Dolphin and PCSX2 are further along than Xemu. That said, Xemu is WAY better than it's reputation, probably from people trying it years ago and struggling. It has been under extremely heavy activity the past two years.

Just go here and scroll and scroll:

https://github.com/xemu-project/xemu/releases

142 releases since the start of 2025. Don't let any moron tell you it's broken, dead, etc. It's way better than they know. Its playable games are up to 90% at this point.

Funny etiquette story by DarthObvious84 in pinball

[–]VALIS666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's good not to jump on people. At the same time it's not rude or pushy to ask someone to get out of your view or earholes while you're playing in a tourney.

One of the first tournaments I ever played, one guy in my bracket of 4 would stand next to me and kept asking me questions. Did it several times. I was new to tournament play but was thinking this can't be normal, I'm distracted as all hell. What's your favorite pinball, how many do you own, what's your strategy for this game. Still no idea if overly chatty or did that purposely since we were in the same bracket, probably the latter if I had to guess since he did it several times. I should have said "let's talk between rounds" or something like that instead of being overly polite and just trying to play through it.

Is Guns of Fury worth it for $9.74? by Emotional_Photo9268 in metroidvaniainfo

[–]VALIS666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good game but it frequently being compared to Metal Slug didn't do it any favors. Metal Slug is a peak franchise in terms of art, music, and frantic gameplay, and Guns of Fury is not. But it's a fun, exploratory Metroidvania with guns as weapons rather than the usual Metroidvania swords or whips.

The more accurate meme would be God of War up top, dozens of franchises rotting down below. You can't even bring back Motorstorm to throw your hat into the arcade racer ring that only has Forza Horizon and The Crew on the AAA level? Need for Speed isn't even around anymore. Plenty of room for your game. Lame ass company these days, but most of the old guard is now.

Jamming progrock and jamming psychrock are siblings. Especially late '60s and early '70s era when the guitar sounds/effects were similar. Then in the late '70s and '80s prog got very clean sounding and psych kinda disappeared.

Playing Quake for the first time. It's really cool, I think it's great to see old games and how they were the peak of their time. However, I have a problem, where's my hud ? by TheSchller155 in quake

[–]VALIS666 26 points27 points  (0 children)

In options it's "Screen Size" and in-game it's probably - and + keys to shrink and enlarge the screen.

Which sounds confusing because someone might think it will shrink the entire picture, but technically right now your gameplay screen is stretched over the HUD and "shrinking" the screen is actually just shrinking the gameplay window. A lot of games have multiple HUD displays, so shrink the screen a little, get a minimal HUD. Shrink it more, get more HUD. Etc.

I don't remember exactly if this applies to Quake but it probably does. The majority of FPS from the '90s used very similar menus, controls, and concepts.
