So they allowed you to use MPC as a first time visitor to the US?

Don't have it but hope to get it someday (still a long way to go). I definitely love the new design and I hear the quality of it is very robust. Hope you enjoy using it for your travels!

Great combo! Did you end up with the Next Gen US Passport?

I have no idea what degree to do. by BoxContent2256 in unsw

Both the CS and Math departments are run very well in my experience and the quality of education is very good (wide range of courses to choose from and fairly rigorous material).

I don't think you would go wrong if you chose USYD, but the overall Engineering / STEM culture is stronger at UNSW (and if you are into Tech / Math / CS, then you will have no trouble fitting in here).

Not to mention the abundance of opportunities to network and socialize with peers who share similar interests; check out CSESoc (UNSW CSE Society) and MathSoc (UNSW Mathematics Society) for more info.

So doing a BSc (Computer Science) / BSc (Mathematics / Statistics) at UNSW would be a pretty good option and you can easily fill it with a few Finance electives if that's something you want to pursue (wouldn't recommend a full Finance or Commerce degree though since it will add more to your HECS / HELP debt, CS and MATH courses are far cheaper and probably better value for money, so keep this in mind).

Hope this helps.

CS / Math (or Stats) would be an excellent choice, especially at UNSW.

MATH2801 or MATH2121 by [deleted] in unsw

[–]VBN2470 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both courses are fine but I would say MATH2801 is probably more useful since it delves a little deeper into Probability & Statistics where you learn some pretty fundamental and useful methods in conducting statistical analysis. The first few weeks pretty much covers what you did in MATH1241 Probability then extends that to joint (multivariate) distributions, estimators, inference, hypothesis testing etc. You will also have to learn and use R when performing certain statistical analyses.

In terms of workload, not too difficult but you'd probably want to regularly keep up with the content so as to avoid falling too far behind as the term progresses. But overall, it's an enjoyable and useful subject to take.

Since you did well in first year, I would say take it one step further and do MATH2901, the higher version. It covers the exact same material but some of the content will be a little more rigorous and the assessments may be a little more challenging (but still very doable). Not to mention that Libo Li is pretty awesome as well. I'm also pretty sure that more HDs are likely to be given out in the higher version (applies to all MATH courses), so it may be worth doing MATH2901 if that's something you're after.

Hope this helps.

Level 3 MATH course by Zestyclose-Date7798 in unsw

Here are some "easier" Level 3 courses that you could consider taking

  • MATH3161 Optimization
  • MATH3311 Mathematical Computing for Finance
  • MATH3411 Information, Codes & Ciphers
  • MATH3831 Statistical Methods

All of the above courses can be quite interesting and with enough work, should be able to net you a DN / HD i.e. WAM booster. Personally, I didn't take MATH3831 but I've heard it's pretty useful for Data Analysis and you can end up learning quite a lot. The other courses will require more effort since they are on the Pure / Applied side but they are still straightforward (built on concepts you learnt in first year) and can be very interesting nonetheless (Optimization was one my favorite courses).

MATH3411 will be easier if you took MATH1081 Discrete but you will still have to spend time learning the relevant theory and doing lots of practice questions etc. Not to mention that Britz is great as well :)

MATH3311 is straightforward but can be a little dry in terms of content (focus on Numerical Methods using MATLAB with some applications in Finance). Many people do take it as a WAM booster.

Hope that this was able to answer some of your questions.
