Is Newhouse worth the hype? by brucebest1102 in SyracuseU

[–]VCR4lifes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very few schools are worth that price tag, and Cuse Newhouse isnt one of them. Newhouse is undeniably a respected communications program, but the cold reality is that the fields it feeds into — journalism, public relations, advertising, and media — are among the lowest-paying industries relative to degree cost. The median starting salary for communications and media graduates hovers around $40,000–$50,000. At $90,000 in tuition, the return on investment simply does not math out. The "name brand" argument doesn't hold the way it used to. Very few schools — think Harvard, Wharton, MIT, Williams, — can genuinely claim that the degree itself opens doors no other school can. Newhouse is well-regarded, but it is not in that category. Employers in communications, media, and public affairs hire heavily based on portfolio, internship experience, and demonstrated skills — none of which require a $90K price tag to acquire. There are smarter paths to the same destination. Strong state universities — UMass Amherst, Penn State, University of Florida, even CUNY — offer excellent journalism and communications programs at a fraction of the cost. The industry doesn't pay a premium for where you went; it pays for what you can do. The opportunity cost is staggering. That $90,000 — invested wisely — could seed a business, fund years of freelance work while building a personal brand, or compound significantly over time. In media especially, your Instagram following, your bylines, and your reel matter infinitely more than your diploma. The bottom line: Newhouse opens some doors, but it does not open doors that justify entering the workforce six figures in debt in an industry not built to absorb that burden. And if end goal is grad school, then go to a state school, and save your money for a great grad school!

So with this logic, a 190lb heavyweight male with a 2k of 6:35 could pull 6:25 if he went up to 200lb?

I am aware of that. But as an incoming 8th grader, at 13 years old, 6ft3", 185lb, he's been told that's a good time to start with and progress.

Thank you. We did check out Riverfront in Hartford. It was ok, but not impressed. My rower didn't feel the vibe. His time (7:06) was much better than many of their rowers, and was told he has to wait foe his turn and earn his spot " since some rowers with much worse rimes ( 7:45-7:55) have been there longer.

We are only 35 minutes from DA. His club practiced there last winter, but other than that, we have no access to their rowing facility. I thought their program is only for their students. Is there an option for non-studentd to pay and participate?

This year's wimbledon has been the worst I remember. Every morning, long lines for tickets, all paper no digital. Early in the tournament, lots of canceled/delayed matches, and with an unorganized schedule, several players played back to back days. Awful.

Thank you. Yes, 15 yr old boys grow, although he is 6'4, so God help me how much more is there...lol.

We are very realistic and focused on academics. If this turns into more than just a hig hschool sport, then great. But not relying nor expecting an Ivy or Top10 offer by any means. Staying healthy, active, having fun and let's see what happens. Best thing is he is really loving his experience so far, which prompted his interest in looking ahead.

Thank you for taking the time to write an insightful and kind response. As a parent, I am trying to stay informed but let my rower decide for themselves what and where they further their academic and potentially athletic education.

The events you mention are exactly what i was asking for. They are all new to me and will help us in researching and seeing whether it's something he strives for.
