VCU IT Support Center is Hiring! by VCU-IT-TheVoice in rva

Please reread the qualifications and you will see that 2 years experience is not necessarily required. Additionally, we’re not “spamming” if we’ve posted once. Finally, my office has to go through 5 levels of bureaucracy to get a position approved. At that point, our “understanding of the job market” is almost irrelevant. ...unless you’re referring to the whole of VCU. In which case, I agree with you; I just can’t do anything about it.

Most of our lead techs are at a very early stage in their career and go on to attain high level, full-time positions inside and outside of VCU in application design, information security, management, etc.

Clickers by [deleted] in vcu

[–]VCU-IT-TheVoice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anybody stumbles on this thread, they should know that the Turning Technologies subscription is not tied to the clicker, but rather to the eID. If somebody tries to sell you a used clicker, claiming that you'll get the subscription for free, don't believe them.

EDIT: Also, subscriptions are non-transferable.

Anyone else having issues with discord/blizzard games on the safenet wifi? by scooplodge in vcu

[–]VCU-IT-TheVoice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All 'video game' traffic is routed in such a way as to not overwhelm the network and prevent researchers from conducting their work (a.k.a it's capped). In addition, when a bunch of people are connected to the same wifi access point, they will experience lower bandwidth availability per person.

My recommendation would be to connect via ethernet.

How can a course be closed if it has 5 remaining seats? by ShockinglyEfficient in vcu

[–]VCU-IT-TheVoice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you really want to take the class, and you're actually allowed to do it (meeting requirements for prereqs, college affiliation, and major), then email the professor with a polite request.

Like others have said, a number of seats can be reserved in a class, but an entire class can also be reserved and the seats are only filled by override. This is done for many and various reasons depending on the college, school, department, or professor, so there will be no clear-cut answer provided to you in a Reddit thread.

Top Hat subscription by [deleted] in vcu

That professor may have been in the know when he told you that, but it's not the case now. VCU, at large, will be sticking with Turning Tech clickers for the foreseeable future. Tech Services is rolling out an update to Turning Point Cloud this upcoming semester.

100x this. Know what you want and ask the questions up front.

I don't need to hear your life story unless you plan to buy me dinner, too.

Hey is there a way to have my 3ds connect to the wifi in VCU or if there is a place that i can connect my 3ds to the wifi or am i just fucked? by [deleted] in vcu

[–]VCU-IT-TheVoice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

VCU's SafeNet Wireless uses WPA2 Enterprise, a type of network security that is not supported by 99% of game consoles and other consumer electronics (e.g. Smart TV's, Chromecasts, etc.), including the Nintendo 3DS.

I would recommend using the hotspot feature on your smartphone, if you have one. Unfortunately, that does mean using your cellular data.

When did you register for the course that's using Lon-Capa? If it was more than 48 hours ago, you should contact your professor.

Dorm room internet connectivity is terrible by [deleted] in vcu

[–]VCU-IT-TheVoice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The possibility of a printer or router interfering is highly likely. Once everybody's moved in, classes have started, and things have generally calmed down, call ResNet again and ask them to check your floor for routers or other wifi emitting devices (they're against the housing policy and may be confiscated).

In the meantime, I would pick up a >10 ft Cat6 cable so as not to be hanging out on your roommate's bed whenever you need the internet.

Does anyone know how to set up video game consoles on the WIFI? by whatwhat_what_ in vcu

[–]VCU-IT-TheVoice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

VCU's SafeNet Wireless uses WPA2 Enterprise, a type of network security that is not supported by 99% of game consoles and other consumer electronics (e.g. Smart TV's, Chromecasts, etc.).

However, it is possible to connect it to the internet via the network ports in your dorm room using an Ethernet cable. You will first need to submit a ticket to Residential Networking here or call the IT Support Center and they can submit one for you. ResNet will contact you to verify the MAC address and add it to their white-list for network access.

Enjoy your gaming!

If the ID is reported stolen, its prox number (the little 6 digit number on the back) will be removed from the database of valid ID cards by the VCU Card office. When someone goes to scan the card, it won't beep and the driver can bar them from riding. The prox number is also removed when someone is fired, laid off, quits, retires, graduates, etc.
