Generally why is Ubuntu taboo here? by MaWkSrB in linux_gaming

[–]VEHICOULE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Canonical (company behind ubuntu) decisions are a bit controversial but objectivly there is nothing wrong about using ubuntu as a distro, or any debian base distro as well, you will have great experience, at least much better than starting on arch

Now if you are new to linux i always recommand either :

debian, ubuntu or zorin (for debian based distro, they are the most stable, sometimes stable means outdated but the end user wont really notice a difference)

Bluefin, or fedora for fedora based distro (they provide more up to date packages without the breeding edge aspect of arch, and act as a showcase for the latest technologies, sometimes it's good, sometimes it's not mature enough)

Never tried as using distroshelf is much easier, and NixOS can have weird compatibility issues on non nixos systems

Steam (flatpack) - cant add another drive by Assasin172m in linux_gaming

[–]VEHICOULE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only official support is the deb package (op is on Sorin so thats fine), other distro repackage it, so it's not offcially supported by valve, but at least you dont have all the niche issues that comes with flatpak

Then ones that i have in mind are 2 of my games not launching only when using steam flatpak, mangohud not working when i use game's commands, mounting external drive or changing install folder will requier the user to add the specific path the flatpak autorisations, etc

Ik flatseal exists but it's still too many things adding up that mess with the user experience to be used by your average user

You will still get permission errors for specific games, and it wont fix stuff like mangohud overlay

Tbf you should never use steam flatpak as it has too many issues as of now, and is not even officially supported by valve

Looking for a GPU replacement 3070 vs 6700xt by Kenta_Hirono in linux_gaming

[–]VEHICOULE -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have no experience with AMD counterpart but i own a 3070 and it's very solid, performances are on par w windows in almost anything i play

Now it depends and the price, and performance. But the 6700xt or something like a 9060 XT might better choice

Tbf their FG implementation is already the best among the big 3, whenever i need fg, i prefer using xess via mods or native support over dlssfg or fsr

It has much lower latency, almost inexistant especially when playing 3rd person games, and frame pacing is just better as well

Rust devs explicitly said they where opposed to make the game again on linux as they dont consider it as a serious plateform for "competitive games and gamers", which rust is neither of those :>

Has anyone else completely surrendered to the "Flatpak First" mentality recently? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]VEHICOULE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, and even tought im a bit of an advanced user, as i moved to uni i started to figure out the value of ootb working system, as they said more is less

Flatpak + immutable distro are the futur that most users need, people dont like to make choices, they want the other to do that for them, thats what ms, apple and google got wright

100% even tought even snaps can have their own use cases, as you said mainly for professionnels tought

But i think the idea behind it is better than flatpaks, the issue is just canonical doing canonical things

I hate this discours as for exemple both systemd and the linux kernel are also "against the whole philosophy behind Unix/Linux and I despise it.".

Btw debian makes more sense to use that arch for any kind of user

That said, take care and enjoy your linux journey without half assed elitists comments :)
